sports fan She takes compelling fiction with her to read during Jazz games He says he never dreamed as a kid about playing professional sports She hated "athletes turned Hornacek down cold when he first asked her out in college because they arrogantly took too many of life's good things for granted He wasn't like that Just look at him He was the boy next door An accountant ticketed for Des Moines It all got bumped off course years ago through a series of odd events the first of which occurred when Bobby Hauch smashed up his dad's car during school got suspended from the high school basketball team and was replaced Fates grinning by a squir-rell- y little junior scrub nicknamed Horny Hornacek wasn't a nerd He had played all kinds of sports since he was 5 mostly hockey and baseball with neighborhood friends around his home in the suburbs of Chicago He played a bit o' hoop accompanying his father who was a high school baseball and basketball coach to practices But largely he participated in whatever was in season '"I was just out there playing" Hornacek says ' From 8 in the morning until lunchtime then we'd run home eat then go back out Hockey football baseball It didn't matter It was fun" First Love: Baseball was his passion At 9 he won a national pitchthrowhit contest and went on to play shortstop and pitcher through his senior year at Lyons Township High School Basketball was a curious afterthought Hornacek who entered high school 110 pounds and left it at 2 at 150 went on to headline his team scoring 22 points a game his senior season Basketball became more important to him — he had already started to bum out on baseball — as he came to appreciate its intricacies Playing a pickup game with Isiah Thomas heightened his appreciation Thomas had attended St Joe's in Chicago the parochial school where Hornacek 's father John worked and happened to be playing in the gym one day just after his stint at Indiana and just prior to going to the NBA Hornacek who was there with his dad joined in long enough to take a pass from the great playmaker and score a layup "Isiah threw me that pass right under the basket" he says "I'll always remember it because it made me appreciate good passing How you can be open when it doesn't look like it I didn't think I was open but next thing I was laying the ball in" Although Hornacek gained new enthusiasm for Isiah s game it seemed unlikely he would do much with it Few college programs wanted him Western Michigan showed mild interest as did Cornell but nothing concrete emerged He finally took up a make-goooffer from Iowa State which had an assistant coach who knew John and charitably invited the coach's boy out to practice with the team "They eventually offered me a scholarship the next summer" Hornacek sa-"only because their other players kept flunking out" He saw little time as a freshman but midway through Hornacek 's sophomore season the venerable Johnny Orr then Iowa State's coach called him into his office and asked whether he had ever played point guard He bad seen Isiah Thomas play it Good enough He started the rest of his college career posting modest numbers including a scoring average his senior year But the team climbed from 13 wins his freshman year to seasons and twin consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances It was the prime of life Not only was he getting his college education paid for falling in love with Stacy a journalism student whom he met in the dorm where the football and basketball teams had training table — she worked there as a tutor — he was i groovin' to a whole new groove thang on the court "The NCAA Tournament was exciting" Hornacek says "More exciting than the NEA Finals last year We lost to North Carolina State by four in the round of 16 1 shot terribly in my last college game" Which he figured would also be his last game end of story Des Moines helllloooo 6-- d ' s 22-wi- n rreird" At the camp Colangelo was impressed and intrigued enough to take Hornacek in the second round (46th pick overall) of the 1986 NBA draft Most of the people in the league thought Jeff was too slow not good enough play in the NBA" says Colangelo "But there was something special about him He had a big heart" " Out Of the Way: Just weeks before that remarkable event Jeff and Stacy had married and were not so much dreaming about the big time as they were trying to scrape together enough money to keep their blessedly new matrimony financially afloat In fact the drafting of Hornacek by Phoenix was seen by the couple as a huge inconvenience — awash as they were in pragmatics "I went to Chicago to work after Jeff was drafted while he went to play in a summer league in Los Angeles" says Stacy "It was overwhelming I was not a sports fan I was trying to get a real job but I was waiting to see what would happen Neither of us thought Jeff would make it" The Fates again were turning their knobs Not only did Hornacek make the Suns' opening night roster he stayed with the club through the date in December after which according to league rules the franchise had to minimumake good on a contract m-salary " "It was like $70000!' says Hornacek " 'Holy Cripes!" " Everything was fresh and exciting for the player the travel the cities the arenas the crowds the money But for the wife everything was frightening "It was scary" Stacy Hornacek says "I remember going to a party at one of the player's houses and the wives were all talking about all kinds of things that went on with different guys which player was cheating on whom One wife told me 'All men are dogs they all cheat' I wanted Jeff to stay grounded I wanted values in my family life stability appreciation for the simple things" She wanted George Bailey not Wilt Chamberlain As for conquests Hornacek found himself playing meaningful minutes in the fourth quarter of close ballgames He averaged 53 points and 45 assists From there his career blossomed due in part to a change in shooting style At the recommendation of Colangelo Hornacek scrapped the shooting technique he bad used since his first year of hoop back on the neighborhood schoolyard in North Riverside 111 It featured a kind of flipping motion that rolled the basketball off his left thumb on his release which is unheard of outside the rec league Basically when Hornacek shot the ball he looked as though he was sprinkler pipe half thrashing through 100 meters of breaststroke down at the local YMCA pool "He had to relearn to shoot the ball" says Colangelo now the Suns' president and CEO "He worked hard And turned into a heck of a pro" After 20 years of shooting the ball the WTong way he taped his left thumb to his hand during practices to keep it from interfering from spinning the bail sideways It was an innovation that brought his elbow in straightened his shots and made his full-seas- d half-hoisti- career Bad Break: Over the next five seasons in Phoenix he scored between 10 and 20 points a game many of them coming on shots from Scotts-dal- e and averaged between five and in '92 A six assists He was an valuable bolt holding together a team that had improved dramatically since all-st- he arrived Then the Weird Sisters slapped him upside the head They had him traded to Philadelphia with two other players for Charles Barkley They turned the game he had come to love into a business They made him cry "One of the only times I've ever seen Jeff cry" Stacy says "It was bizarre" A dark moment in his unlikely ca- reer "It hurt" says Hornacek "I helped that team go from 25 wins to 55 wins You always knew you could be traded but when it actually happened I realized this isn't just a game Its a business" Philly was a pit with ownership and management deeper and deeper over the l'2 seasons Hornacek languished there "They didn't know what they were doing" he says The team was losing and he was wasting what should have been the prime of his time in the NBA "in February 1994 Scott Layden blessed Hornacek with news that the Jazz had acquired him for guard Jeff double-dippin- g Malonc "It was a shock" Hornacek says "But we were happy to come back west I liked Salt Lake City from the times I'd been here before and it was a winning team Stacy was excited" Since that time Hornacek has aver- aged just more than 15 points and four assists a game and become a Jazz fixture at shooting guard quickly forging an indelible identity with the club and the duo of forever Jazzmen John Stockton and Karl Malone "One of my real regrets is that we didn't get Jeff from the beginning" says Jazz owner Larry Miller "He should have been here his whole career" His adoption however is complete Miller signed the player three months ago to what the Hornacek says — "I'm 99 percent sure anyway" — will be his last NBA deal: two years at around $4 mill per Hornacek's feeling for the Jazz and the city in which he plays has flourished A single disappointment although not openly complained about is the fact that the shooter wants to shoot let it fly and those shots are limited in the Jazz's methodical offensive approach to the game "Sometimes I get frustrated because I want to shoot the ball more" says Hornacek "I'd love to shoot it 25 times a game That would be fun But I enjoy the strategy we use too When John Karl and I get the three-magame going we do little tricks where we don't even have to talk about it it just flows Sometimes I want to just run and gun But Jerry doesn't want me pulling up for quick n jumpers" Goes: Perhaps he doesn't draw it up that way but Sloan says his comfort zone with Hornacek's comprehensive and creative shot selection which includes everything one-fofrom to running floaters to squibbers is vast Says teammate Greg Ostertag: "It's sick some of that stuff he throws up Anything there" But "you feel pretty good when he lets it go" Sloan says This season with Stockton's knee surgery Hornacek has taken a more aggressive role particularly of late Over the past five games heading into Monday night's game against New Jersey he averaged 19 points a game For the season he is shooting over 50 arc and percent from the three-poiaverages six assists Moreover he has steadied the Jazz and hit clutch shots during spans when his teammates seemed intent on doing structural damage to the Delta Center with nuclear scuds "He's one of those guys who just keeps playing" says Sloan paving his ' highest jock-talcompliment then ratcheting it up even further "Thing is Jeff's a better person than plaver" That part the Fates left alone! Hornacek knows his position and place He knows he could wind up his career with 15000 points and 5000 assists He knows the privileges of living and lasting in the NBA He knows thousands of Jazz fans cheer him But normal he remains "I'm the same as I've always been" he says shrugging seemingly amazed that the ordinary has somehow become extraordinary "We haven't changed We've tried to stay k Sitting in the kitchen of his Salt Lake City home where artwork by his daughter Abby hangs on the refrigerator and Ryan pictures of his boys and Tyler frame what matters most and a green chewed-urubber dog bone sits atop the counter and just outside an open door a -down lawnmower awaits the awkward hand of the mechanic-wannab- e the Homaceks are nothing but The glamour of the NBA seems far away "I look forward to the day when I'm done playing" he says "Then I can spend more time with the kids Stacy has sacrificed her writing career so I could do this I want her to do that write books whatever she'll be great We're building our house here so I'll stay home and be Mr Mom Maybe down the road I'll coach a high school team but for us the most important thing isn't getting too wrapped up in what we're doing in basketball it's our family "We just want to be good people good parents" It isn't Des Moines but it's close Let the Fates laugh all they want finger-painte- d p Steve Cleveland has been intent on instilling confidence and pride into the men's basketball program After Saturday's loss at Utah State Cleveland was obviously disappointed yet he focused on the positive "If you would have told me coming into this thing against Utah State t that we would have a opportunity with two seconds left on the clock I would take that" said Cleveland "There was no quitting in us at Utah State We could have easily quit and gone away but we didn't" The Cougars missed two in the closing seconds and dropped to 3 But almost coming back from an 11 point deficit with
