Show B12 BUSINESS Tuesday December 2 The Salt Lake Tribune FTC Won't Redefine 'Made in America' Few Fliers Flinch at By JOHN D McCLAlN THE ASSOCIATED Bag Limits PRESS WASHINGTON The Federal Trade Commission decided Monday to continue its definition of "Made in USA" labels to mean products are "all or virtually all" made in the United States The commission had undertaken a two-yestudy to determine if the definition was outdated by global economics and should be Carry-O-n UniTED United Airlines Tests Idea in Des Moines BY 1997 expanded to permit more than a small amount of foreign content As a result last summer it proposed guidelines that would have allowed companies to use the label if "substantially all" of a product was made from American parts or assembled by US laborers Under that proposal merchandise with as little as 75 percent US parts would be able to bear the label Public reaction overwhelming ly was opposed to the change "The overwhelming response to our request for public comment convinced us that when consumers see a 'Made in USA' label they expect and want it to mean just that" said Jodie Bernstein director of the FTC's consumer protection bureau The commission voted 4 to 0 to accept the bureau's recommendation that the "all or virtually all" standard be retained i P SOLOMON BAXDA THE ASSOCIATED PKESS — DES MOINES Iowa — There was little grumbling among United Airlines passengers flying out of Des Moines on Monday as the carrier began an experiment to speed up boarding and satisfy business travelers longing for more space The rule which affects only United flights departing Des Moines International Airport limits people paying low fares to item rather than just one carry-othe standard two "It's an inconvenience for bags in people to jam carry-oand then try get up and down the aisle" said Jack Trant who was returning to Virginia Beach Va with his wife "This will help us move efficiently into the plane" The airline hopes to eventually extend the policy to all flights to free up carry-ospace for business travelers who usually pay more and sometimes complain they can t find room for their bags "We'll probably board a little quicker and probably get off a little quicker" said Doug a business traveler from Nevada Iowa flying coach to Chicago United spokesman Tony Molin-ar- o said the airline chose Des Moines to test its new rule because of the area's high percentage of business travelers Des Moines has four times the business travelers using United to fly compared with similarly sized cities such as Omaha Neb and Kansas City Mo Molinaro said Laptops briefcases purses coats reading material and baby bags do not count toward the one-iterule Charles Jackson who clutched a large garment bag as he waited for a connecting flight back to Chicago said such a rule wouldn't make him look to other airlines i t "y"': n Saturday December 13 1997 Deer Valley -
