Show Volume VIII Issue IX THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 9 August 15, 2003 Henry Eugene Robinson M.D. Compiled by Stanley F. Wangsgaard Dr. Henry Eugene Robinson was born April 28, 1885 in Hooper, Weber, Utah, son of Eugene Robinson and Mary Manning. He attended school in Ogden, and later taught in the Weber County schools. In 1911 he graduated from the Gross Medical College in Colorado, now connected with the University of Colorado. He married Lula Parker November 14, 1912 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She was born November 4, 1885 in Hooper, Weber, Utah, daughter of Edwin and Catherine Cox Parker. Their first home was in Huntsville where he had been practicing medicine a short time, and had his office where they resided, as stated in the history of Liberty by Lysle and Zella Chard. However, it has not been determined exactly where that was. A small note appeared in the newspaper that read: “Twins were born 21 Dec 1912 in Eden to John Simpson Gould and Mary Ann Mortensen, delivered by young Dr. Robinson who has started a practice in Huntsville.” Someone reported that a grandson of Joseph Felt, Shirley Felt Jacobsen was delivered November 9, 1913 by Dr. Robinson, and there were many others during the approximate two years he practiced in Huntsville. Virginia McEntire Stallings tells of how she became known as “Judy.” These are her words: “When dad worked in the barbershop, mother always sent up a sandwich for him. We didn’t have a lot of money, and so she never bought cold meat or anything fancy, but she would fry an egg and break the yolk and put it on bread. Dad liked that. She had me take that up to him about 6 o’clock in the evening in the wintertime. One Saturday as I went up there, the barbershop was full of men and boys. The Liberty men had brought their sons over for a haircut who were about my age. Dr. Henry E. Robinson was there. He was a young doctor there in Huntsville and we all liked him. When I came in he said, ‘There is my little Judy.’ He then told them that he was reading a book, and there was a little girl in it and her name is Judy. ‘I always think of Virginia because she looked like her, and acted like here, so you are little Judy to me.’ “When I got old enough to go out and the Liberty boys would come and get us, they remembered being there and heard me called Judy, so they started calling me Judy. Everyone in Eden and Liberty has always called me Judy and even my mother called me Judy before she died. If I hear Virginia, I know it’s Huntsville people talking.” Dr. Robinson found he had tuberculosis and so, with his wife, moved to St. George, Utah where they lived for a period of time, hoping to recover his health by the lower altitude. This sad announcement appeared in the Ogden Standard on Monday, November 22, 1915: “After a lingering illness from tuberculosis, Dr. Henry Eugene Robinson, 30, one of the best known of Ogden’s youngest physicians, died Sunday, 21 Nov 1915 at the home of his father-in-law, Edwin Parker in Hooper. He was a faithful member of the Mormon church and well known in Ogden and vicinity.” A message sent to Mrs. Robinson from the Ogden Valley Commercial Club dated November 21, 1915 is here quoted: “Inasmuch as the Allwise Creator, in his compassion, has translated Dr. H. E. Robinson from this mundane sphere of action to his heavenly abode; we bereave the departure of our dear friend and brother, who by his arduous efforts during his short residence in our midst, for the advancement of our community, has endeared himself to every resident of our vicinity. “We earnestly desire to, and hereby do express to the bereaved wife (Mrs. Robinson) and family our heartfelt sympathies in this trying hour of their sorrow, ever mindful that we must at all times humbly bow to the Divine mandates of our Creator, whenever they may be given. “May this message perform a mission of condolence are our sincere wishes. funeral. Impressive funeral services for Dr. Henry E. Robinson were held November 23, 1915 at 1:00 p.m. at the Hooper ward meeting house, with Bishop James R. Beus presiding. The Hooper ward choir sang the following: “The Lord is My Shepherd,” “Oh Grave Where Is Thy Victory,” and “Rock of Ages.” Henry Thomas sang, “The Pilgrims’ March”; Royal Robinson, “The Journey Onward”; George Manning, “I Shall Be With Him”; and William Pickett sang, “I Shall Go Where You Want Me To Go.” The speakers were Bishop James R. Beus, W. C. Winder, Dr. Joseph R. Morrell, Dr. Ezra C. Rich, President Henry Blood of the Davis Stake, and Apostle David O. McKay. Each speaker spoke in the highest terms of the deceased, referring to his sterling qualities, exemplified in both professional and civil life. Dr. A. S. Condon, representing the Weber County Medical association, read a paper expressing deep regret over the loss of one of their honored members. The church auditorium was not large enough to seat the friends and relatives of the deceased and the floral offerings were many and beautiful. The grave in Hooper cemetery was dedicated by Frank Belnap. Twenty girls acted as flower carriers and six of the relatives of the deceased as pallbearers. Dr. Robinson’s widow, Lula Parker Robinson, re-married October 23, 1922 to Francis A. Child. He died June 27, 1958. She was employed at the State Industrial School from 1927 until 1945, and served as matron. She served with her husband in the presidency of the Western States LDS Mission. They also presided over the LDS Mission Home in Salt Lake City for several years. She was a member of the LDS Ogden 7th Ward, and former member of the Ogden Stake Relief Society Board. She was a member of Camp R., Daughters of Utah Pioneers, former member of the Junior Child Culture Club, and former member of the board for the Children’s Aid Society. She was also active in the Red Cross and the Ogden Stake Singing Mothers’ Chorus. She died Tuesday, July 17, 1975 in Ogden, at age 89.
