The Fire and the Great People Who Lived Through It All By Drienie Hattingh It was high noon on the 14th of June and up in the Wasatch Mountains, high above Huntsville in the Monte Cristo area, temperatures soared into the high 90’s. It had been like that for weeks and in recent days it had reached 100 degrees. Another such day was in the forecast. In Evergreen, a subdivision of Huntsville just west of Causey Reservoir, the relentless heat Hotshot firefighter cleans up after east Huntsville fire. bounced off a backhoe while the operator moved rocks around to clear pads. As the backhoe rolled over the rocks, a spark flew into the tinder dry grass. Jesse Shupe, his parents, and siblings live on Water Canyon Road in Evergreen. On that sizzling, hot day he and his stepsister Jacqualynn Anderson decided to take friends up on their offer to use their pool. The two teenagers drove down their mountain, past Red Rock Ranch toward Causey Reservoir, looking forward to a cooling swim. But their hopes were dashed when they discovered that the pool was drained. Hot and bothered, they retraced their way back home. That is when Jesse saw the smoke. “There’s a fire!” He called out. “It is close to our house!” Just the day before, their Dad Larry Shupe told his children exactly what to do in case of a fire. This summer was the worst they’ve ever seen. These thoughts washed over the teenagers as they sped toward their home – trying to miss potholes and rocks in the rough mountain road. When their house came into view they saw flames high above their property on the hill. Jesse ran into their house and called Red Rock Ranch who is the “First Response for the Monte Cristo Area.” Then he called 911 and his neighbor to warn him and finally his dad. The teenagers rushed outside and started clearing dry brush around their house and watered the area close to the house and the roof. At Red Rock Ranch, co-owned by Jan and Ray Yoak and Marci Miller, things kicked into action. This “working ranch/restaurant” is a popular spot for locals to meet. There are roughly 400 homes and trailers in the area with year round residences, weekend and vacation homes. This situation wasn’t foreign to the folks at Red Rock. Search and rescue was always conducted from their store when someone got lost in the mountains, or in case of a drowning at nearby Causey Dam. As soon as Marci got the call from Jesse Shupe she dialed 911 seconds before Jesse did. Then she checked on food supplies knowing there would be lots of hungry folks in the coming days. The ranch workers cleared a horse pasture behind the restaurant for the helicopters that were on their way in. “It’s going to be a long night.” Marci thought as she busied herself with preparations to feed hundreds of folk. Red Rock’s working Cowboys Mickey Zuidema, Ray Yoak, Ed Cassidy, Richard Hearvirland and his dad Jeff, and Mickey’s wife Amanda, jumped into their trucks grabbing spades FIRE cont. on page 7 Utah from California where he was living. A warrant for his arrest was filed June 18. Judge Hadley has set bail for Whetton at $200,000 cash. Whetton entered into negotiations with Ski Associates for the purchase of Nordic Valley Ski resort over a year ago, and ran the resort for one winter season. An article in the Standard-Examiner on July 24 stated that Whetton failed to pay the nearly $1 million he owned employees and for various bills, and failed to pay a contractor $613,818 for development work.
