For more information, contact Fran at rbushidioglot@comcast.net A group of residents from Ogden Valley, including several members of the Huntsville Utah Stake Relief Society Presidency met July 22 at the Montessori School in Eden to discuss a new idea in designing and developing a compact and simple gardening kit that can be distributed to third world countries. The kits are designed to help families from these countries become more self sufficient through a simple gardening technique. The Square Foot Gardening (SFG) method, developed by Mel Bartholomew, now of Eden, can be successfully practiced worldwide. Utilization of the basic and easy to use gardening concepts provide a means whereby families can improve the nutritional value of their diet, and develop a primary or supplemental income to improve their standard of living. On August 9, this idea came to fruition as individuals from Weber and Davis County gathered at the Square Foot Demonstration Garden to assemble the compact gardening kits. Bartholomew states that the idea is being successfully developed, and was encouraged by those who attended the Saturday workshop. Participants were briefed on the humanitarian effort, and received a ready to plant garden kit that they agreed to test. The inexpensive garden kits are being designed so they can be shrink wrapped, stacked on a pallet, and sent around the world. According to Bartholomew, this is the first of many humanitarian projects he hopes to initiate. Bartholomew is the founder of the non profit Square Foot Gardening Foundation, and the developer of the demonstration garden center in Eden. Mel often summarizes his philanthropic passion by stating, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day . . . Teach a woman to garden and she will feed her family forever.” Anyone interested in participating in the SFG project is invited to come to the garden center on Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. to help build and plant for an hour. A free gardening demonstration follows at 10:00 a.m. For more information, visit the Square Foot Gardening web site at sqaurefootgarden.com or email Mel directly at info@squarefootgardening.com For a schedule of gardening workshops, visit The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS calendar of events.
