And, while they are still at home, memories give your child (even teenagers), a strong sense of family commitment, and a desire to actually be home because they enjoy it. Here are a few wonderful ways to make memories with your children. Have a special day alone with them. Near their birthday, and halfway in between birthdays, take only that child out to do something with you alone. Sometimes, especially in large families, we get so busy that we don’t spend undi vided time with each child. This becomes a much anticipated day to spend quality time together. Write them a letter. If your children go to camp, or even when they are just gone to school, write them a letter. Tell them why you love them, and some reasons why they are so special to you. These positive strokes will be read again and again, and help keep your relationship strong as your children get older. Pass something special down to your children. One mother gave each of her daughters a special piece of jewelry and told them to pass it on to their daughters when they were old enough. This reminds your children of your family, and their heroic ancestors. Make a picture book. Keep your camera out in plain sight at all times, with a goal to take at least one picture of each child each month. Your children will love look ing at past photos to see how they’ve grown. As an adult, it also stirs fond memo ries, especially if you write little messages under each picture. Videotape them. Video cameras aren’t very expensive anymore. Videos can show things that pictures can’t, such as movement and speech patterns. Your grandchil dren will enjoy seeing their parents as children, too. Take a yearly vacation. The best memory makers are yearly vacations together. You have many memorable experiences, and there’s time to reminisce about earli er years, too. Keep a journal. Write about all the things your children are doing, and the funny things they say. Try to write at least one thing about each child each month. This is a wonderful way to recall the character and uniqueness of each child. Give your children an ornament for Christmas each year. By the time they move out, they will already have a box full of ornaments for their own trees, and they can sit back and remember all the years. Do something crazy together. Try singing at the top of your voices as you take a walk around the neighborhood, or something else equally as funny. Things that are totally out of the ordinary may seem silly, but often result in fond memories. Tell them about their ancestors. Do research together and learn things that your ancestors have passed down to you. This creates a strong family bond, while insur ing that their memories and their lives will live on.
