Now he can sit poolside to gaze on the view—even in May. The addition of six large solar hot water panels to heat the pool means that during months once too cold, the water’s fine. Roscoe decided to add solar heating to the existing pool to extend the swimming season, and to do away with large gas bills to heat the pool’s water. The six, 4 x 10 foot panels rest on a rack on the hillside behind the Roscoe home, out of the way, but on the job constantly during sunny hours. Now, those who wonder whether such natural technology would work at their own homes, can visit the Roscoe home, along with several other sites, during the annual Utah Solar Home Tour. The tour, which is free to the public, will be held 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, October 5. The statewide tour features three homes in Ogden Valley, as well as the Greg Smith home on the Mountain Green side of Trapper’s Loop, and the new Heaven’s Gate Animal Sanctuary south of Morgan, which is being built by Huntsville residents Tom and Diane Benstog. Each site will be open during those hours to those interested in quizzing homeowners on how their systems work, and why they chose renewable power. The Utah tour is affiliated with the National Tour of Solar Homes, sponsored by the American Solar Energy Society. Last year, on one day, 38 states hosted their own tours. Utah’s tour has been held annually in October for the past four years. The Utah homes and cabins on the tour feature a variety of renewable technologies, among them solar power, wind-generated electricity, passive solar, and radiant-floor heating. Most installations use a combination of technologies. Map brochures will be mailed to those calling 801-745-2009, or 888-745-2009. Tip a Cop Campaign Yields Results for Narcotic Strike Force OGDEN, Utah – The Weber Morgan Narcotic Strike Force’s “Tip a Cop” campaign, initiated in May of this year, has resulted in numerous drug-related arrests, the seizure of large quantities of illegal drugs, and in one case, the arrest of a man involved in a gang-related shooting. An agent at the Strike Force received an anonymous phone call on its toll-free 1-866TIP-A-COP line that alerted police to the identity and subsequent arrest of one of the shooters involved in the June incident that resulted in the death of a young Ogden boy. “To the people who have called, I can’t thank you enough for your efforts in working with us to make your neighborhoods safe and free from the unsavory activity associated with drug dealing and illegal drug use,” stated Mike Ashment, Commander of the Weber Morgan Narcotic Strike Force. “The overwhelming response to this program is an affirmation that our communities are full of people that care about their neighborhood and the environment in which they live and raise their children.” In the period from May through July of 2002, calls to the Tip a Cop line nearly doubled the number received in the same period last year. The calls from those three months resulted in the discovery of a methamphetamine lab, the seizure of ten pounds of marijuana, six pounds of methamphetamine, and a half-pound of cocaine, and dozens of arrests for possession of personal use quantities of various illegal drugs. Ashment praised those who offered their tips and leads through the Tip a Cop line, “The information provided by citizens is truly a key factor in our ability to impact the drug problem in our community. That’s why we’ve adopted the slogan ‘It’s Your Neighborhood’ to emphasize the importance of ownership and collaboration between the community and the police.” Ashment also stresses patience in regard to these investigations, “I know it is frustrating for citizens when they call and do not see immediate results. Unfortunately, these cases take time to complete. Countless hours of surveillance, preparation of search warrant affidavits, and other investigative techniques are necessary to develop cases that we can prosecute and obtain a conviction in court.” Ashment concluded, “I can’t stress enough that although a typical narcotics investigation is protracted, one phone call at the right time can make a big difference in a case that may take months to resolve otherwise.” More information on the Tip a Cop program can be obtained through your local police department, or you may call 1-866TIP-A-COP—officers can send you a brochure with tips for recognizing drug activity in your neighborhood.
