Show Volume II , Issue I The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 15 October 1999 Student News World of Work! By Savanna Burton and A.J. Hicks, sixth grade reporters World of Work at Valley Elementary is a good learning experience for the 6th grade. First, each child must get at least a 1 or a 2 in their grades. If they get those grades, then they will be able to apply for a job. During the first of the school year, each class had elections for Mayor, 1 st council member, and 2 nd council member. The rest of the class can apply for jobs like: Animal Care (2 people) Cashiers (2 people) Banker Board Cleaner Custodian News Reporter Display Manager Paper Passer Librarian Messenger Nature Center Caretakers (2 people) Police (2 people) S.O.S Staff Store Manager (2 people) Team Coordinator (each table) Tutors (3 people) We had a chance to design money which we can spend at the store or save to pay for the event tickets. We have a Barter Day coming up that you can bring stuff from home and sell it for frogz, the cooler the stuff the more the frogz. When the 6th grade has an event, each student must pay for the ticket. Just last week the 6th grade had Pioneer Day, a day where the students had an experience to do the things that pioneers would do daily. They even got to go and have school lessons in the Old Huntsville Cabin. Each student paid 150 frogz for the event ticket. There will be many more events during the rest of the school year. All the 6th grade is looking forward to each one! Pioneers Spotted in Huntsville Town! How fun can a day at school get? On Thursday, September 24, 1999, sixth graders at Valley Elementary School experienced a magnificent day in their World of Work or WOW program. In WOW, each kid has a job and are paid in “Frogz,” their choice of currency. Everyone who saved Children learning how to make candles. enough Frogz got to purchase their ticket to the past..... Pioneer Day! Everyone had tours of the Huntsville Town Log Cabin. Inside the cabin they witnessed how children were taught and disciplined. For instance, they read books, including scripture, and used Bible stories to illustrate how to solve problems. When they got in trouble, they sat in front of the class and wore the “dunce cap” (dunce means you weren’t using your brain). They made corn bread by hand grinding the grain, and made butter by taking cream and shaking it in a jar. They also made candles by alternately dipping string into hot wax, and then cold water over and over again. A very popular activity was making pot holders by crocheting leftover material or rags together and weaving them into various designs. “It was awesome, and everyone enjoyed it!” exclaimed Kyle Ward of 6-2 class, taught by Carolyn Hogge. Another fun thing about it was that everyone got to wear pioneer clothes and play pioneer games like hoops and sticks, to make the day more authentic and all the merrier. My opinion is that it was great, and no one should miss an opportunity like that in their lifetime. Students experiencing Pioneer Days with sixth-grade teacher Michelle Evans.
