Local Artist Steve Johnson to Hold Fourth Annual Art Show By Shanna Francis Local artist Steve J. Johnson is creating quite a name for himself with his country style pencil drawings and Gouche opaque water paintings that often feature his own four kids Levi, Isaac, Cheyenne, and Cooper, their Austrailian Shepherd Belle, and their and their neighbors’ livestock consumed in a wide variety of everyday antics. The popularity of Mr. Johnson’s work lies in the scenes he creates that help audiences recapture their juvenile casual and consuming intimacy with an unmeasured day, and in his clever and creative captions that add dimension to each illustrated story. He recently earned the distinctive People’s Choice Award at this year’s Traces of the West Art Show that was held in conjunction with Pioneer Days. The award winning creation was an eight foot long, two foot high piece entitled “Barnyard on Parade.” Steve received his B.A. in Fine Arts from Weber State University. Originally his artwork focused on wildlife, but he eventually found an eager audience with a genre that has become his trademark. His first limited edition print came out in 1991, and was titled “Team Ropers.” Since then he has had 25 more limited edition prints produced. Ten of these productions have sold out. His originals have sold in exclusive galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. His artwork can also be found in a gallery in Kamloops, British Columbia. Most of his prints are sold in numerous galleries throughout Texas, Colorado, California, Oklahoma, Utah, and New Mexico. After an article about Mr. Johnson and his work appeared in the journal “Western Horseman,” he filled orders for prints as far away as Hawaii and France, and several to Denmark. More recently Coca Cola bought the rights to one of Mr. Johnson’s paintings featuring a young cowboy stooping down with his dog in front of a large Coca Cola advertisement that once could be seen painted on the side of Leon’s Market in Huntsville. Coca Cola will use the painting on limited collection trays that will be marketed nation wide. A Pennsylvania afghan Captain Hook by Steven J. Johnson. company has also bought the rights to use his images on their product. Mr. Johnson’s literary effort, “From the Back of a Horse,” published by Stickhorse Publishing, features over fifty pencil and paint renderings collected creatively in the form of a scrapbook that tells a story about things you can do from the back of a horse from the perspective of a child that has grown to manhood, and now looks back through the pages of the past with a young daughter of his own. This popular creation has all but sold out in the last two years. His newest endeavor is a 2000 calendar entitled, “Scenes From the Y2Korral” which features Mr. Johnson’s artwork, again, creatively compiled, and guaranteed to bring a smile from the winsome collection. Mr. Johnson’s art gallery is located at 7368 E. 200 S. in Huntsville. It can be found two doors east of the Shooting Star Saloon. The gallery is open by appointment only. Steve and his wife Kristin will be hosting a fourth annual art show at the gallery on November 6th from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m., where Steve’s newest limited edition print will be released.
