Show Volume II , Issue I Page 5 The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS October 1999 Be a Positive Role Model for Children As a parent, isn’t it cute when little two-year-old Jimmy wears your boots, Susie wants to tag along with you to the back forty, or five- year-old Mack informs the family he wants to be a farmer, just like dad. These situations are all welcome indications that someone is watching closely, but it means you better be on your best behavior. Children are observing everything you do as an adult, and often follow suit without knowing whether it’s right or wrong— they just want to be like mom, dad, grandma, uncle, etc. Your behavior as an adult makes a big impression on young minds. Safety on the farm is a big concern. Agriculture has long been known as a dangerous occupation with many injuries and fatalities to both young and old alike. The environment of the farm is inherently dangerous and the actions to perform work require caution and observation of safe practices. Often times we, as adults, forget and perform farm tasks in an unsafe manner. Do we want our children to continue in this tradition and accept the consequences that result from practicing dangerous practices? If children are influenced by what they observe maybe it’s time to change some of the things we do. Be a good role model to protect the ones we love the most - our children. • Don’t allow extra riders on machinery. • Turn off and remove keys from machinery when not in use. • Wear proper protective equipment when using chemicals and tools. • Walk around high-speed machinery such as power take off shafts instead of stepping over. • Inform others about your whereabouts and when you expect to return. • Retrofit safety features such as rollover protective structures and seat belts. • Stop all machinery before making adjustments. • Heed warning signs and decals. • Follow instructions for proper use of machinery. • Recognize and acknowledge when mistakes are made. Kids will follow suit! Remember, kids are watching. They will be repeating what you say and do. In order to prevent them from getting hurt make sure you are doing things in a safe manner. It might make the difference between an enjoyable afternoon spent together and a trip to the hospital or even worse—the cemetery. The Less Stress Money System “Millions of Americans have bought into a lie: debt provides freedom, power, and wealth. Make no mistake. Debt is bondage and not only robs you of your wealth but also your peace of mind. But that is a fact anyone extending you credit or loaning you money doesn’t want you to know. Is it any wonder debt is the most aggressively marketed product in the United States?” That is the message Chris and Kory Wright share as guest presenters at conferences throughout Utah and Idaho. From Ricks College Womens’ Week to BYU Education Week to the Governor’s Initiative on Families Today (G.I.F.T.), the Wrights teach people not only how to seize control of their financial future but also how to reduce the money stress on family relationships. “You don’t have to wait until you’re financially free to have financial harmony,” states Chris. “And money decisions are more than dollars and cents,” adds Kory. They emphasize money’s role as a means of achieving family enrichment. In response to requests from seminar attendees, the Wrights have authored Turn Your Debt Into Wealth, an easy-to-use kit that helps people create their own debt-elimination schedule and comprehensive spending plan. “Most financial books are overly detailed. We wanted to offer a streamlined yet effective system for eliminating debt and really mastering spending habits. This is what people were asking for,” Chris explained. “For many people,” Kory concluded, “getting out of debt and staying out of debt is the single most significant step they will take toward putting their financial house in order. And we just provide a simple tool and hopefully the motivation to start today.” P RESCHOOL LEARNING TIME GR E AT ST RU CT U R E D PRESCHOOL PROGRAM ♦ F LEX IBLE SCHEDU LE ♦ 2-5 DAYS PER W EEK ♦ MORNING OR AFTERNOON ♦ R EASONAB LE R ATES ♦ F AMILY DISCOU NTS =C AL L T O DAY = 7 4 5 -5 6 0 0 NOW IS THE TIME TO INTRODU CE YOU R CHILD TO A FU LL SCALE PRE -SCHOOL .
