You are miles from any help. What can you do? You’ve been trained in CPR but the guy that taught the course neglected to tell you how to perform it on yourself. Health Cares of Rochester General Hospital recommends the following: Without help–the person whose heart stops beating properly and who begins to feel faint--has only about ten seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can eventually get to a phone and, between breaths, call for help. If you believe you are experiencing the beginning signs of a heart attack, it is also recommended that you immediately take an aspirin after calling for help. Speaking with personnel at the Eden Fire Station, they recommended that if you feel you are experiencing a heart attack, call 911 immediately. The earlier treatment is started, the higher your chances are of surviving a heart attack with as little, if any, permanent damage as possible. If paramedics respond to a call, the patient is only charged if they are transported. Paramedics want residents to know that it is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to heart attack symptoms. Fraudulent Telemarketers: They’ve got your number… now they want your money! Beware! If an unknown caller: · Says you’ve won a prize but asks you to send money first. · Says you have to act right away. · Instructs you to wire money. · Offers to have someone pick up a payment from your home. · Says he or she is a law enforcement officer who will help you—for a fee. Follow these guidelines to protect yourself: · Check all unsolicited offers with your Better Business Bureau. · Don’t assume a friendly voice belongs to a friend. · Never give your credit card, checking account or social security number to an unknown caller. Say NO to telemarketing fraud! If you think you’re a victim of fraud, call toll free: 1-877-987-3728, or write to Know Fraud, P.O. Box 45600, Washington D.C. 20026-5600. This is an important message from the Postmaster General of the United States Postal Service. Postal Patrons Entitled to Free Delivery System The U.S. Postal Service provides at least one form of free delivery service to postal residents, including those who are not eligible for carrier delivery service. Ogden Valley residents are entitled to one of two forms of free delivery. A mailbox can be erected on the carrier’s current route or, if no carrier service is available to your area, a “no fee” box can be procured within the Eden post office. The “no fee” box size is limited to the smallest, box “one” size. If you are interested in placing a box on the carrier’s line of travel or changing to a size one box, contact your local postmaster for details. The following information was provided by the United States Postal Service. O R D ER NO W! Enjoy the beauty of The Valley all year.
