Show Volume XXVII Issue II The Ogden Valley news Page 13 June 1, 2020 CFOV Winning Essays Selected Community Foundation of Ogden Valley (CFOV) recently sponsored their annual essay contest in conjunction with the beginning of the CFOV’s Giving Drive, which runs May 1 thru September 30. The theme this year was “Philanthropy in My Hometown – Live Here, Play Here, Give Here.” CFOV is an organization that provides a way for people who live and recreate here in Ogden Valley to give back to the community. CFOV raises money and awareness for 17 nonprofit organizations that help make Ogden Valley somewhere wonderful to live. From pathways, the arts, parks, skiing, open space, and emergency preparedness to supporting our military families, CFOV supports many facets of Ogden Valley. CFOV benefits the entire Valley, and also those who visit and recreate here. Examples include multiple and varied valley-wide improvements—from building tennis courts and trails, to bettering our local schools and community parks, preserving open space, and multiple efforts in between. No matter the way, CFOV is committed to Ogden Valley. The contest was open to all students from the 5th thru 8th grades. Participants were encouraged to write an essay about their understanding of how they can be a part of giving back to their community and how they see CFOV at work. Cash awards of $25 each were awarded to the seven students with the best essays, as judged and evaluated by CFOV. In addition, a “Give Back” check for an additional $25 was distributed to each student with the winning essays so they can then designate their favorite non profit organization (NPO) within CFOV, to donate that money to. The Community Foundation wants to recognize that in previous years, a founding Board Member and Chairperson, Marion Horna, donated the prize money to CFOV. This year, new board member Hap Stephens and his wife Jo donated the prize money; thus, allowing CFOV to continue to focus donations on the NPOs. Thank you to those dedicated valley philanthropists! Below are the winning essays. Additional essays may be printed in future issues of The Ogden Valley news. Community Foundation of Ogden Valley By Kira Thomas The Valley has quite a bit of philanthropy. Philanthropy is the desire to promote the welfare of others. Many of the foundations in the Valley affect our everyday life. For example, the Snowcrest PTO. The Snowcrest PTO coordinates with school administrators to help with academic and other social activities. Some of the academics that the SBO supports are English books, PE equipment and Music Boards for the band. The biggest nonprofit that affects me is Snowbasin Ski Education Foundation. I have been on the ski team since I was five years old. Being on the ski team has taught me hard work, teamwork, sportsmanship, and many other valuable life lessons. One of the nonprofits that affects us all is Weber Pathways. Weber Pathways has been working to build a bike trail around the reservoir. Many of the kids in the Valley use these paths to get to school and many other locations. Many organizations give to our community; it’s time that we give back. Some of the things that we can do are keeping the pathways clean that Weber Pathways worked so hard to build. We can continue to support the Ogden Valley Balloon Festival, which is held here every year. The nonprofits in our community have given so much to the Valley. The least that we can do to thank these nonprofits is to enjoy the features that they have added to the community and keep them in good shape. Community Foundation of Ogden Valley By Mimi Hogge Imagine walking into a town where everyone waved or just gave a friendly smile! Do you know of such a place? Well that’s what I like to think of my town—besides a couple of grumpy old fellows. In this essay I will talk about the businesses, the games, and how we give in our community! So, keep reading if you would like to learn more about this amazing place I talk about. Let’s talk business! In this place where I live, there are little hometown shops everywhere you look! For example, we have a little shop stop! There are food, souvenirs, essential oils, and, of course, dessert! Everyone in this little shop stop is the friendliest. They will comment on your clothes or even something that you would have never guessed someone would realize! The food place sells pizza (probably the best you’ll ever taste) and it’s takeout for when you’re on the go! Across the street from that, there is an actual restaurant, so you can sit in and enjoy yourself! Souvenirs are the best. They are something to keep on your journey and in the same store there are toys for the little ones! In the souvenir shop they will do whatever they can to make sure you get satisfied. Yeah, essentials they are the best! When you are staying here for a while and forget your smelly lotion or just normal, this is the place to stop. They even have essential oils that smell just as fabulous as the wonderful lotion! Yummy dessert. I love dessert and especially this shop! They have customized drinks, ice cream, and some coffee for you grown-ups. Ice cream is the world to me so without getting dessert you might be a little lost. Well that’s just the little shop stop, you need to come here and see it yourself to realize the greatness of the stores. Games, games, games—so much fun! The games here are just little hometown games— nothing big but to see them play and have the time of their life; that’s what we like to see! There are soccer, golf, tennis, football, and even more. Let’s kick it off with the pentagon ball (soccer)! Soccer is such a fun sport anyone can play; all you need is a good attitude and some good legs (and I guess a little coordination is good!). Golf is one of my sister’s favorites! Golf is a great sport when you don’t have snow on the ground. You can bet and really just make up your very own competition for this sport. After all, everyone loves a good winner. Tennis outfits are the cutest! Tennis is probably one of the most fun games to play with your family on a nice day, so we try to go and hit some of those little green balls! Touchdown! Football is an awesome sport and one of the most fun to watch. I know it can be a little confusing when you don’t know anything about football; but if you have a football all-star, or even just a dad, you could have the time of your life! But there’s so much more so come watch a game or two with me! Now, since you’ve heard all of the amazing things about this town, you might be wondering what do we give? Well, we don’t litter, we give money in odd ways, and we let people know we are there for them. Well, you might be thinking who would litter; am I right? But, we don’t just not litter we pick litter up because everyone makes a few mistakes and the garbage might have blown out of their pocket while they were riding a bike; and you never know the other side of the story. Now, looking back, you might be thinking money is money; you can’t give it in odd ways, but sometimes you can! For example, the little Valley Market will collect our receipts and make some money off of it; and then they give the money to the school. Or, you might be thinking about the traditional box tops! Everyone buys cereal, and most cereals have box tops so just collect them; and… boom… money! And, we let people know we are here for them. Like, when someone is going through a hard time we bring meals or groceries and so on. We care and love for all of our neighbors and do not know what we would do without them. That is how we give to our community. In conclusion, my community is pretty great! We have awesome shops, games, and we give to this community because we love it. I love my town and the people in it and this is how I serve.
