Letters to the Editor Red-tailed Hawk Shot in South Bench Area of Valley On May 8, when returning to photograph beloved Red-Tailed Hawks, I found the female dead near her nest, next to a field we recently planted in the South Bench Area of Ogden Valley. Just 12 days prior, I photographed her from the tractor while working the field. When I checked her body, I recognized her brood patch, a featherless area on her belly used to transfer heat to their eggs when incubating. I took her body to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Northern Utah and we determined she had been shot sometime the week before, suffered and died recently. I brought the Wildlife Conservation Officer up to investigate, collect additional evidence, and file a report. These hawks, and most other birds, are protected under the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act that is an Establishment of a Federal prohibition… to “pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, attempt to take, capture or kill, possess, offer for sale… at any time, or in any manner, any migratory bird… for the protection of migratory birds… or any part, nest, or egg of any such bird.” My late husband and I have been admiring and photographing the birds nesting at this remote farm site for decades. The day I found her and the several times I’ve been back, her mate is still in the nest area calling out with a hoarse soft call, one much different than their normal vocalization. I know this stuff goes on, too often. Trespassing to get to the nest site is wrong enough but to shoot a hawk. I leave you with this question: Where have we gone wrong as caretakers of our planet when someone things that it’s OK to illegally shoot or harm innocent animals? Sincerely, Robin Roberts, Huntsville The “Progressive Bogeyman” & Healthcare Could progress be made on better access to healthcare for working families? Folks, there have been 27 changes (Amendments) to our U.S. Constitution over the years. Our founding fathers embraced “Progress” - it is deliberately engineered into our American Constitution because our founders knew circumstances would change and our representatives could not be hamstrung from making necessary improvements when the situation called for it. None of them were designed to tyrannize or erode our freedoms and rights. They were designed to enhance our experience as Americans without infringing on our Constitution. It was progress and progressive efforts by definition that gave you the right to keep and bear arms—not the Constitution. It was progressive efforts that gave our ladies a voice and the right to vote via the 19th Amendment—not the Constitution. I am certainly not an advocate for flippant Constitutional change. I don’t consider myself a liberal, a conservative, or a progressive. I consider myself a simple American who wants what’s best for us all. In fact, I spent my life honoring my oath to support and defend it. So, for those who continue to beat the drum of disapproval for whom they label as progressives and vilify those responsible for the ideas that have amended America’s Constitution 27 times since its June 21, 1788 inception—and subsequently changed 2.5 years later with the first “progressive” 10 amendments ratified in December, 15, 1791; yup, the Bill of Rights. I say… don’t fear of the “Progressive Bogeyman.” Disagree? Well then, I say come on down to The Mad Moose and let’s plot the plan to start rolling back the previous Constitutional amendments like the right to keep and bear arms. Then, let’s take away the right of ladies to vote, and, lets discontinue Social Security for all the Americans who depend on it too (I know, that was not quite an amendment). While we’re at it, let’s take away free speech too— and all the rest of the progressive amendments to the Constitution. Otherwise, I say be a part of the solutions dialog that we need because there are Americans out there that need your help and pragmatic solutions to America’s problematic healthcare access. For you ladies, I ask why are you voting for candidates who don’t support needed progress? It was a progressive idea, God forbid, of giving woman the right to vote that now gives you a voice—our ladies, the caregivers. You’re the ones who take care of the kids and family and worry about their health (let’s not get into a gender roles discussion here—that’s not my point). Yet, you continue to vote for representatives who make you choose between your family’s health and financial despair. I ask you, then, why would fully half of our population, ladies, who have a voice and can vote, continue to vote for either party if you had a viable alternative candidate that truly puts your family interests first? A time will come in 18 months. You may not say or admit it for fear of retribution in your family, your community, or your church, but when you go into that voters booth in November 2021, you will have the chance to say “I want better for my family” and you’ll pull that lever, press that button, color that dot, mail that ballot, whatever, and you will vote Colonel Michael “Mike” Seguin, Utah Bull Moose Party. You will do this because you know I will do my best to make certain intelligent change that assures your family will not have to choose between financial ruin, and the health of your kids. And when you come out of that booth, you can say with confidence you did not vote for that radical COL Seguin to your family and friends, but be secretly confidant you in fact did vote for your family’s health, the Utah Bull Moose Party, and COL Michael “Mike” Seguin. No one has to know it was you who made the difference.
