The Serve to Save Dinner and Auction held Thursday, March 9 in the Valley Elementary School Gymnasium was a smashing success thanks to your support and the incredible people who attended, donated, and responded. Sixth graders at Valley Elementary School funded our own Sam Gerritsen, a secondgrader who desperately needed a diabetic alert dog, the Mpendo-Packer Foundation as they build a school/ health center in Uganda, the International Refugee Committee of Northern Utah to facilitate funding for homes and clothing for refugees accepted into our area, and added to the Valley Bulldog Scholarship available to any student who has attended Valley sixth grade. More details on how to apply later! We raised a little over $15,000. The evening was full of tender moments. Coach Dane Coggins, a recipient from two years ago, said, “This was a turning point for me in my life two years ago when I needed my kidney transplant and the sixth grade helped. With the funding and love from Serve to Save, everything started to work out. I will buy tickets and come every year that the sixth grade does this. Thank you for what you kids did for me.” Tickets sell out every year. We email, announce, and admonish students to tell their families to not wait and take a chance at the door. There were many who quietly slipped their purchased tickets back into the pile without requesting a refund so that others could buy and eat or who just came to shop and bid. There is no tech crew for student performers. We teachers are busy running everywhere so students who perform are told to come with family that will help. If there was a snag, thank you for understanding! Speaking of performers, The Stringtown Band volunteered without hesitation and was outstanding. The evening entertainers were a hit. One auction item that sold for over two hundred dollars was won by a person who found out how badly a previous bidder wanted the item. The winner turned around and gave it to the previous bidder. This event gives us goosebumps of gratitude for the kind of people who inspire us all. There were businesses and individuals who brought silent auction items to the office and to the gym itself that night without needing any recognition. One example was the beautifully stitched hot pink baby quilt that we have no idea who brought. The list goes on and on, but it just adds to the love and kindness evidenced by the people who live in our valley and in the surrounding area. We are a community filled with love. How blessed we are when we work together! Stellar businesses helped make it happen by donating coupons, items, and baskets or certificates for goods and services. The dinner served by sixth-grade students was provided by Prairie Schooner, Eats of Eden, Gray Cliff Lodge, Jackson Fork Inn, Timbermine, The Oaks, The Greenery Restaurant, Snowbasin, Carlos & Harley’s, and Harley & Bucks. Sixth graders served, took tickets, ushered, emceed the program, lead as scouts, decorated the gym, prepared tables and posters, wrote letters, cleaned up and more. They learned to work as a group, accomplishing something huge because of each smaller effort. This kind of giving, the kind where there is nothing that the giver expects to gain, is one of the best. When you give without thought of benefit for yourself, you gain all! Because of you, sixth graders had a character education and united community experience of a lifetime. Thank you Cindy Crawford, Julie Matysik, Mr. Hales, Mrs. Chris Fuller, Mr. Mack DeVries and our own wonderful cooks from the school. Additional thanks to Dawnah Hoffman and her grandma Jean, Meri Songer, Mrs. Melba Hogge, Jim and Angel Truett, The Rawsons, Gerritsens, Post Asphalt, Pat’s Food Shack, Zach Gunter, Nikki Wolthuis, the Kilgore Family, Cindy Hillstrom Family, Powder Mountain, and the volunteers from United Way and IRC for helping with the This is the Price tables and the pay tables. Thank you for all whose names are not here because we don’t know them! Bless you and our best to all of our recipients. Thank you. Thank you all! Sixth-grade teachers, Valley Elementary School |
