Then Come Play with Us at This Year’s 2nd Annual CFOV Summer Scramble Show us you are a true Over—a person who loves Ogden Valley—by coming out to play with us on August 6! The Community Foundation of Ogden Valley (CFOV) invites the entire community to get ready for the 2nd Annual Summer Scramble Golf Tournament and Community Event being held at Wolf Creek Resort August 6. This exciting day will have something for everyone . . . a morning on the course for “real” golfers, and an afternoon of family-friendly fun including a team putting contest with lots of prizes, great food, live music by Dark Horse, and opportunities to meet the friendly folks behind the non-profits that serve Ogden Valley while also learning about what they do. In addition, there will be opportunities to enjoy fun and games at each non-profit booth. From 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., join in the team putting contest. For $10 a round per two-person team, children (16 and under) and adults can enter and play to win. The putting green in front of the club house will be set up like a real golf course, with sand traps, water hazards, and other obstacles. No experience is needed! Think miniature golf, but way more fun and with fantastic prizes. Register on-site the day of the event, and enter as many times as you want. From 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., hang out and listen to live music from the popular band Dark Horse while enjoying pizza, burgers, shaved ice, and drinks. Don’t Miss the Grand Finale—The Chopper Drop! Stay to the end of the day’s events so you don’t miss the highlight—the grand finale . . . the Chopper Drop! Watch as a helicopter swoops in low over the golf course green at 5:00 p.m. and drops a load of numbered golf balls, which are the equivalent of raffle tickets. For details on the Chopper Drop, see the article It’s a Bird. It’s a Plane…. on page 1. Proceeds from the Summer Scramble will be used to help fund the work of participating non-profits that serve Ogden Valley via CFOV’s OVerDRIVE fundraising campaign. Participating non-profits are, alphabetically, Back Country Horsemen, Great Basin K-9 Search & Rescue, Huntsville Park, Liberty Park, Mountain Arts and Music, Ogden Nordic, Ogden Valley Adaptive Ski, Ogden Valley CERT, Ogden Valley Land Trust, Ogden Valley Tennis Association, Ogden Valley Winter Sports Foundation, Valley Elementary and Snowcrest Parent Teacher Organizations, Weber Pathways, and Wolf Creek Foundation. Hmmmm . . . . Mountain Maggie was spotted recently at Wolf Creek, kicking her 9 iron into OVerDRIVE when she heard about the CFOV 2nd Annual Summer Scramble. Said she wanted to hit a hole in one and win a car! Who is she anyway? American Spirit Contest Announced By John W. Reynolds This year, 2016, marks the fifth year that local Utahans will participate in a patriotic contest that is focused on American Spirit—something our forefathers instilled in this nation 240 years ago. Most of us understand what is meant by American Spirit, and this belief is enriched during the months of May through September when we celebrate Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Pioneer Days, and Labor Day. Much of the celebrating includes family vacations, parades, fireworks, and the honoring of our heroes. The American Spirit Contest seeks to find people who will translate their patriotic thoughts and feelings into a form that can be shared with others. This year there are four categories in which you can participate: Essay, Photo, Motto, and Art Drawing. You are challenged to take a moment away from celebrating and give serious thought to what American Spirit is and how it affects you and your family, neighbors, and country. In recent American Spirit contests, which have been essay only, some very interesting thoughts have been shared about the American Spirit of patriots, veterans, pioneers, first responders, family members and colleagues, and even celebrities. With the added categories of Photo, Art Drawing, and Motto, it is hoped that even more contestants and expressions of patriotism will be forthcoming. In thinking about “spirit” you may associate it with many types of spirit such as school spirit, pioneer spirit, esprit de corps, holiday spirit, family spirit, Holy Spirit and many others. Similarly, many types of American Spirit may also come to mind, and that is what you are asked to define—in words, photo, drawing, or motto; this is the challenge. It is the same challenge you might have heard from cheerleaders at a basketball or football game as they encourage fans and teams . . . “We’ve got spirit, yes we do! We’ve got spirit! How about YOU?!” If you are up to the challenge, please give it some thought and develop your own private brand of American Spirit; it could be rewarding. The prize for First Place in each of the four categories is $150, and each runner-up will receive $50. Cash awards will be given in September. Past entries have come from adults in their eighties and children as young as eight. For additional information, contact John Reynolds at 801-782-8077, or see the ad below. We have our fingers crossed and are hoping to start construction this fall (2016). Our goal is to have a compacted gravel pathway completed before winter arrives. Asphalt is not planned for this phase due to the amount of funding required for a project of this size.
