Ogden Marathon a Wet, Wild & Windy Success In the words of Candis Facer, a retired second grade teacher from Huntsville, “Running is a celebration of life.” On May 21, that celebration was a wild, wet and windy Ogden Marathon, which brought runners from all but four states and from seven different countries across the globe, including South Africa, Ecuador, China and Germany. Over 8,500 runners braved the elements and participated in the events from the full marathon, to the Granite Construction Kids K, and every distance in between, with the largest event, the half marathon, topping out at about 4,800 registered runners. Earlier in the week at the Ogden Marathon 10-year club dinner, Facer was honored by being inducted into the Ogden Marathon Hall of Fame, which recognizes the achievements of those in the running community who have contributed to the industry. “It means the world to me,” she said. Facer runs her races for, and awards her finisher medal to someone she knows who either can’t run, or who has suffered tragedy in their life. She has been running for over thirty years and this was her 13th Ogden Marathon. Despite the weather, the comments on social media about the race were overwhelmingly positive, mostly praising the huge volunteer effort and offering the volunteers a huge ‘thank you.’ This year, there were 1,743 volunteers who gave a collective 12,202 hours of service on behalf of the athletes. Here are a sampling of some of those comments: We are in awe of the volunteers standing out in the rain with such cheery smiles! – Vicki Cain The heroes here were the volunteers. Much respect. – Carol Rhoades The volunteers make this race such a fantastic event! Can’t wait until next year!!! – Todd Dalley The volunteers were AMAZING! They endured what we did with a smile on every one of their faces! You are the best! – Elaine Lowry Amazing law enforcement and EMS personnel! You turned such horrible conditions into a great event! – Jon Middleton “I couldn’t be more grateful for all the incredible work of our volunteers,” said Jenny Scothern, executive director of the GOAL Foundation, producers of the Ogden Marathon. “The foundation upon which this organization was built is our incredible volunteers. They truly are the very heart of everything we do,” she said. “They showed an unwavering commitment this year, despite the weather conditions.” The GOAL Foundation has also been well supported by local groups both large and small, law enforcement, generous sponsors, and the community at large. “We are incredibly grateful for the relationships we have with our law enforcement, the Ogden Valley residents and community, Weber County and Ogden City, and all of our amazing sponsors who have supported us over the years,” said Scothern. The Ogden Marathon is a major component in the GOAL Foundation’s mission to get Weber County residents and visitors out and active. They spend a large portion of their time during the school year to encourage elementary aged kids in the YMCA and Boys and Girls Club to participate in their Young Runners Program. At the end of their school year, the students can earn an entry into the Kids K or 5K races. GOAL also works to raise money to provide athletic shoes to kids in their Young Runners Program who may or may not otherwise be able to have them. “There’s nothing like seeing the smile on a kid’s face when they put on a new pair of shoes,” said CT Carla Taylor, the GOAL Foundation Youth Programs manager. “They feel like they can conquer the world,” she said. The GOAL Foundation makes contributions to the Eden Park Foundation and is also contributing to the Ogden Valley Community Foundation.
