This is the legacy of Val A Browning, whose vision of bringing world class performance to Ogden and making it available to most has been realized over the last 40 years. This year we will present two performances in the Browning Center for the Performing Arts and four in Ogden’s Peery’s Egyptian Theater and, as always, we are excited by the artists coming to our community. Weber State Cultural Affairs begins its season on September 5 in the Browning Center with a much acclaimed performance by renowned actor Julian Sands (The Killing Fields, A Room With A View, Impromptu, Leaving Las Vegas, Arachnophobia, Oceans 13, and The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo.) presenting a “Celebration of Harold Pinter.” In 2005, Mr. Sands was approached by the Nobel Prize winning playwright and poet Harold Pinter to prepare a set of Pinter’s poems for a special presentation in London. This extraordinary collaboration evolved into a wonderfully humorous and fascinating solo show directed by John Malkovich. On November 1, banjo player extraordinaire Noam Pikelny (of the Punch Brothers) is joined by the lovely voice of American singer and songwriter Aoife O’Donovan. Pikelny has emerged as the preeminent banjoist among a new generation of acoustic musicians, and is the lead singer for the progressive bluegrass string band Crooked Still and a member of the female folk-noir trio Sometymes Why. After a chance meeting at an airport in Europe, Malian guitar virtuoso Vieux Farka Touré and Israeli superstar Idan Raichel forged a deep friendship that led to an impromptu get together at a small studio in Tel Aviv with Israeli bassist Yossi Fine and Malian calabash player Souleymane Kane. They bring their collective to Peery’s Egyptian Theater November 14 for an evening of collaboration and improvisation that spans the world. Sybarite5 are young classically-trained musicians working across genres. “Their rock star status is well deserved. Their classically honed technique mixed with grit and all out passionate attack transfixed the audience…” That is how the Sarasota Herald Tribune described Sybarite5, the first string quintet ever selected as winners of Concert Artists Guild International Competition. Their repertoire is a mix of classical and contemporary composition. They will perform January 16, 2015 in the Browning Center for the Performing Arts. With Japanese drums at the foundation of its world fusion mix, On Ensemble takes the ancient instruments of taiko into new realms. Infusing the powerful rhythms of ensemble Japanese drumming with elements of hip-hop, rock and electronica, On Ensemble’s unique sound has been praised as “completely original and brilliantly conceived.” Modern Drummer magazine calls On Ensemble “an exciting taiko ensemble looking at new ways to apply traditional Japanese drums.” Watch for On Ensemble February 13, 2015 at Peery’s Egyptian Theater. And we close the season with a bang on March 7, 2015 presenting Ira Glass with Monica Bill Barnes and Anna Bass in a show called 3 Acts, 2 Dancers, 1 Talk Show Host. This American Life host Ira Glass has been working with Monica Bill Barnes & Company to invent a show that combines two art forms that, as Glass puts it, “have no business being together in a show.” With this montage, you can look forward to a funny, lively and very talky evening of dance and stories at Peery’s Egyptian Theater. Tickets for all events are on Sale August 1, 2014 and available from the Dee Events Center Ticket Office, WSU Downtown or the Browning Center for the Performing Arts. Also on line weberstatetickets.com or at 801-626-8500. 15, with activities continuing thru August 17.
