Crockett, Ph.D. Were our Founding Fathers to view the American federal government and how it operates today, I am certain they would be appalled. They would be hurt and of disheartened anguish to see just how far we have strayed from what they gave us…. “A Republic [have we given you] if you can keep it,” said Benjamin Franklin to an inquiry as to what form of government the Founders had decided upon after the Constitutional Convention. Activist judges have seen to the taking over of our schools, private sector hiring and firing policies, farms and how much they can grow, granting benefits to illegal aliens paid for by the taxpayer; they have expelled God or any reference or even study of Christian or Judaic religious history in the making of America; they have protected pornography, racial discrimination in law school admissions, and burning of our flag. They have allowed private property to be taken without just compensation and given to private persons for greater tax revenues and they have protected partial birth killing of future generations. They intervene in the electoral process, announced that basic morality is an insufficient basis for legislation; and on, and on, and on. The United States Supreme Court has ruled against states’ rights and overturned the will of the People and disregarded Constitutional limitations. In fine, the Supreme Court has broken through the protective firewall the Founding Fathers set up to limit the powers of the Judiciary and Executive branches of the government and allowed a concentration of powers unimagined as possible by our Founders. Justice Curtis’ dissenting opinion in the Dread Scott decision reads, in part: “When a strict interpretation of the Constitution, according to the fixed rules which govern the interpretation of laws, is abandoned, and the theoretical opinions of individuals are allowed to control its meaning, we have no longer a Constitution; we are under the government of individual men, who for the time being have power to declare what the Constitution is according to their own views of what it ought to mean.” Amen to that and we see this is exactly what has happened with our Supreme Court. They assume powers they do not find in the Constitution. In Circle of Democracy, Alexander Tyler wrote in 1770: “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. [I must say he misstated here, as we have a Republic, not a Democracy] It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship.” We now have a virtual dictatorship because the government has run out of our money and now must crank up the printing presses to make up the difference in what it takes, by force, from us and distributes to others. I have been castigated (thankfully by only a very few) for writing that it is not the proper role of the federal government to take care of the poor and needy. However, I stick to my position as nowhere in the Constitution is any power granted to the federal government to forcibly take money from you and me and give to another. At the very least, it should be left up to the states, a la the Tenth Amendment, and at the very best, it should be left up to the Churches and the People to take care of the poor and needy…and I might add, voluntarily. What is the biggest problem facing America now? Our biggest problem is that no one looks to freedom as a solution any longer. We look to government. There is no freedom without responsibility. The past year they donated the People under the pretense of caring for them, we will be a much happier people and better off financially. There will always be the poor among us. Jesus commanded that we see to the widows and orphans and the poor. He said, “We,” not the government; and we were to do it voluntarily. God does not force anyone to be good or to do good. I love the Founding Fathers; what a great bunch of men, and to have had them on this earth, on this land, at that time…all together, is nothing short of a miracle. James Madison wrote, “If Congress can employ money indefinitely for the general welfare, and are the sole and supreme judges of the general welfare, they may take the care of religion into their own hands; they may appoint teachers in every state, county, and parish and pay them out of the public treasury, in like manner schools throughout the Union: they may assume the provision of the poor. Were the power of Congress to be established in the latitude contended for, it would subvert the very foundations, and transmute the very nature of the limited government established by the people of America.” Samuel Adams added: “The utopian schemes of leveling [redistribution of wealth] and a community of goods [communism] are as visionary and impracticable as those which vest all property in the Crown. [They] are arbitrary, despotic, and, in our government, unconstitutional.” The Founding Fathers were universally opposed to using government funds to buy votes in return for welfare, and expressly kept the government out of the redistribution of wealth scam we are experiencing today. It is not the government’s duty to support anyone. The government does not owe anyone a living. We should acquire our living ourselves by our own efforts and never by trespassing upon the rights of our neighbors by asking the government to “take” from one and give to another in need. The more money people receive for not working, the less they work. Those unfortunates who do need assistance and cannot work should be voluntarily supported first by family, then by a Church, and, when that fails, then by the people generally by voluntarily making contributions to the support of that individual. Americans are the most generous people in the entire world and believe me, if the government were to cease taking money from us by force to take care of others, no one would go hungry or without shelter or raiment and even health care. We are engaged in a war. It is what is called a “mixed” war. A “mixed” war is one in which war is made on one side by public authority (government), and on the other side by mere private persons. We are a people of mixed races, nationalities, tongues and cultures but have one thing in common; we wish to pursue our happiness without interference from anyone, especially the government. We all wish to keep and enjoy the fruits of our labors without it being taken by force and given to others. The Founding Fathers knew the nature and history of governments; that they tend to be dangerous servants and fearful masters and must be tied down by the chains of the Constitution. They also knew that it was the nature and disposition of almost all men that as soon as they get a little authority they almost immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion over their fellow man. We are a nation of laws, power held in the hands of We The People and have granted the government only a few powers and have retained all the others. But, we have allowed those powers to be usurped and abused and the exercise of powers We The People never granted to those who govern. Will we survive as a nation of Liberty or will we fall under a tyrannical government where we have to beg the government for our entire existence? a large grant to assist in putting a new playground in.
