Competitors from all over the United States will gather for this annual event. From July 2 to July 4, handlers will compete for national points, monetary prizes, and bragging rights using their Border Collies to move sheep through fences, gates, and pens in a timely manner, being judged on how well they can direct and control their dogs, sometimes from 300 yards away. Set in the picturesque Ogden Valley and highlighted by Mount Ogden of the Wasatch Mountain Range, Kelley Creek Farm provides a haven for handlers and their dogs. Spectators will be treated to acres of green grass, shade trees and cool ponds as they observe this magnificent breed of dog, perform the tasks for which they were bred. Patsy Dickens and her late husband, architect Brent Dickens, created this refuge for the enhancement of Border Collies and all breeds, providing a training ground for sheep herding, dog agility, and obedience training. The farm’s rolling landscape, refreshing water features and endless acres of open space, offers a sanctuary for dogs and their handlers. Their farm “constitution” touts, “THIS PLACE IS FOR THE DOGS,” a slogan that has proved to be a surprise and delight to many a weary City dog and their owners. Kelley Creek’s trainer and farm manager Shauna Gourley competes nationally in both herding and agility competitions, often with the same dog, a rare occurrence as the skills required for each are contradictory. Shauna, along with many of the Kelley Creek Sheepdog Trial competitors also compete at the Soldier Hollow Sheepdog Classic, held annually in Heber, Utah, a prestigious invitational trial that hosts top competitors from all over the world. Some of the early sheepdog trials began in the late 1800’s in Scotland and Wales, when one sheep farmer bragged to another that their dog could fetch and move sheep faster and from a further distance than his neighbor’s dog. The winner was afforded bragging rights in their district, prompting on going contests, still taking place today. Spectators and their leashed, non-aggressive dogs will be welcome to attend this year’s event each day from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Some seating will be provided but guests are welcome to bring their own. Jutta’s German Food will be on hand to provide lunch, beverages, and snacks for a nominal cost. Following Saturday’s event, guests will be treated to a live country band and refreshments. Directional signs will be provided for parking purposes. Kelley Creek Farm is also available for weddings, reunions, and other special events. Ogden Valley’s Farmers/Artist Market SeasonOurOpening Event a Success Simply Eden Bath & Body was started opening day at the Ogden Valley Farmers/Artist Market was great. Attendance was fantastic! We’re looking forward to our fourth season. The Ogden Valley Farmers/ Artist Market is located at 2628 Highway 162 in Eden—just west of Valley Market, and is open Saturdays during the summer season. We would like to introduce some of our vendors. Simply Eden is located in Eden, Utah, and excels in their creation of goat-milk soaps and bath and body products, which are hand made using quality ingredients without harsh chemicals and detergents that commercial products contain. The goats are raised locally and milked twice a day. Athena Steadman, owner of Simply Eden, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) several years back and decided that she needed to make an adjustment in her life. In order to get a handle on her MS, she made a change in the way she ate. Athena began eating food the way it was meant to be. Meaning, everything she ate was made from scratch or as close to it as possible, which is the way people have been eating for hundreds of years…until the era of convenience. This, in turn, enabled her to get a handle on her MS symptoms. This lifestyle change also led her to move from a stressful job in the restaurant business to a job working out of her home, which allowed her to take better care of her body— inside and out. After working from home for several years, she decided that her dad’s entrepreneurial side was telling her she needed to do something fulfilling. because she realized that the so-called “soap” that she was using was actually a harsh chemical detergent that was irritating her sensitive skin. Athena decided that she needed to go back to the basics with her skin and back to the way soap was meant to be. As she delved into the world of soap, she realized there was much more to it than just taking some sodium hydroxide (lye) and mixing it with fats to create soap. Each oil or fat has a different property, which then creates unique soap for individual skin types. Athena’s long lost love of chemistry was now coming into full glory. Meaning, the entire process of soap making, the way grandmother made it, was actually a naturally occurring chemical reaction that occurred right before her eyes. Simply Eden Goat-Milk Soaps and Bath & Body products are handmade using quality ingredients without the harsh chemicals and detergents that store-bought products contain. Athena makes her soaps via the cold-process method, which requires at least a fourweek cure period to ensure a mild, luxurious bar of soap. She uses goat milk due to its mild cleansing, as well as moisturizing properties. All of her soaps are made with recipes that she has formulated, using skin-nourishing oils such as olive oil, avocado oil, rice bran oil, Shea butter, coconut oil, and even hemp seed oil or the exotic babassu oil. In addition, all of the oils she uses are sustainable and do not contribute to the deforestation of rain forests.
