Show Volume XIX Issue IV The Ogden Valley news Page 11 May 15, 2011 Waiting to Play A red-haired boy rode by on his bicycle today, a tennis racquet tucked under his arm. He was on his way to the junior high to learn about tennis, eager to test out his own racquet. Imagine the day when this boy and all the other youth of the valley can play on a real tennis court. Imagine this boy and his family going to the courts on a summer evening to play Parent Child doubles. Imagine the youth and the adults of our community picnicking on the grass near the courts, enjoying the games they’re watching, cheering on the play of their family and friends. How long before this boy can play? This vision will soon become a reality with your help. The Community Foundation of Ogden Valley is selling commemorative bricks to raise funds for this project. The bricks will adorn concrete pillars that will grace a beautiful entry plaza to the tennis courts. There is really no other place in the valley that serves as a monument to all our many wonderful residents, past and present. Small bricks will have three lines of text and cost $100 each. They are a great chance to commemorate a special person, event, or date in your life. It would be a wonderful way to commemorate your family founders, a family business, or service to your country. We are also hoping that all of the alumni of Valley and Snowcrest will want to be on the wall. For an extra $10, you can add a Skyhawk (or any logo) to your brick. More expensive, larger bricks can contain more text and will be more visible on the wall. Polished concrete blocks, for an even larger donation, will be placed on a Wall of Honor. Donors may also purchase benches and picnic tables. Giving is Easy. Log on to www.cfogdenvalley.org and use your credit card or fill out a form in the tennis brochures available at all businesses in the valley. For more information about giving, please contact Ross Mertlich, fundraising chair, at 801-745-3731. TENNIS cont. from page 1 a get to know the game and what we have to offer. This event will be held in conjunction with the proposed Grand Opening Celebration. For more information email <OVTA@ me.com> Open court time will allow for Ogden Valley residences to join in the fun. All schedules are dependent on the completion date of the courts. The committee is still finalizing details of court hours and programs. The program steering committee is looking for community a north-end representative (Valley elementary North) and a community south-end representative. If you would like to be considered for the program steering board, or wish to have input on upcoming programs, call Roger Bailey at 801-745-2539. Valley Elementary Announces Plans to Implement Tennis Training Program The Weber School District recently provided the opportunity for the Valley Elementary P.E. facilitator to attend a training sponsored by the Intermountain Utah division of USTA. Jaime Capener, the Junior Recreation Coordinator, supplied the elementary with inservice training applications and information in the following areas: l P.E. Curriculum l Station Signs & Ideas l QuickStart Tennis Format l Jr. Team Tennis l No-Cut School Tennis Teams l Teacher & Coach Workshops l Equipment Grants & Loans l Tennis Skillastics Valley is now on the waiting list for an inservice with Jaime, and we plan to implement this information into our existing P.E. program. Jaime has given us a myriad of ways to put the curriculum into operation without a court on our premises. It is incredible that Snowcrest Jr. High, located about 2 miles north of us, will have the needed facilities for our students to enjoy in the future. Each grade will implement the QuickStart tennis format based on their curriculum and ability level. Each class is guaranteed 30 to 50 minutes of time in our gym per week. The time spent in P.E. instruction is increased with the use of outdoor scheduling and facilities. Tennis curriculum will add beautifully to those opportunities. As of now, our general curriculum outline is as follows: l 3 to 6 week Fall unit - Introduction to tennis vocabulary, individual skills, and form (mostly indoors). l 3 to 6 week Spring unit - Unit introduction to the team and match aspect. Weber School District will paint QuickStart lines on our playground so we can follow the QuickStart format. We are excited for this opportunity for our students and staff! Huntsville 4th of July Committee Announces Speech Contest The Huntsville 4th of July Committee has announced a speech contest. Prizes will be awarded as follows: $500 for 1st place, $300 for 2nd place, and $200 for 3rd place. The committee’s goal is to encourage and increase appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy in America. We expect participants to address these freedoms and the special people who have provided them for us. Requirements 1. Those entering the speech contest must be between the ages of 15 and 18. 2. Reside within the Huntsville zip code area (84317). 3. Speeches must be typewritten. 4. Speech must have a cover page that includes the name, age, address, and phone number of the entrant. Tennis Court Complex Fundraising Campaign Fundraising for the new Community Tennis Complex has had a wonderful start. With only $35,000 in support from the community, it will become a reality. The complex will include four courts located adjacent to Snowcrest Jr. High. The Weber School District Foundation is leading the coalition to make it happen. RAMP has provided a $100,000 grant, and another $50,000 grant is expected from the United States Tennis Association (USTA). Valley and Snowcrest have donated Chard Foundation funds. The Weber School District has donated the land and on-going maintenance after the complex is completed. Van Zeben Architecture has donated all the planning documents and construction drawings. Others are committing significant in-kind donations. Now it’s up to the rest of us in the community to dig in and provide the remaining money. Donors will be recognized; for a contribution of $100, a substantial brick engraved with the donor’s name, or the name of another you’d like recognized, will be placed on monuments located adjacent to the entry plaza. Larger pieces will recognize those who make more substantial contributions. Funds are needed by June 15 so construction can begin, and the courts opened at the beginning of the new school year in the fall. In lieu of a grant, the Community Foundation of Ogden Valley is leading this part of the fundraising effort. Tax deductible donations may be made using the official donor form obtained from multiple Valley businesses or found on the Community Foundation of Ogden Valley (CFOV) web site <www.cfogdenvalley.org> The donor form may then be mailed to the following address: CFOV PO BOX 684 EDEN UT 84310 If you prefer, a board member can also visit your home and pick up your contribution.
