Show The Ogden Valley news Page 6 Volume XIX Issue IV May 15, 2011 Announcements Eagle Scout Award Chase Warburton On May 4, Chase Warburton was pinned as an Eagle Scout. His grandfather Bill Bayles conducted the meeting. Mr. Bayles resides in Red Bluff, California. He’s created a standard of excellence in scouting for his family. As a long-time volunteer in the scouting program, Mr. Bayles is a recipient of one of the highest awards in the First Holy Communion scouting program, the Silver Beaver. The Silver Beaver Award is the councillevel distinguished service award of the Boy Scouts of America. Recipients of this award are registered adult leaders who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council. Chase has lived up to his grandfather’s expectations in completing his Eagle Project. His family recognizes and appreciates the many hands that have contributed to Chase’s success. Chase has now set his sights on serving in the Order of the Arrow, an elite scouting program facilitated entirely by youth scouts with the purpose of providing cheerful service to others while, at the same time, creating tomorrow’s community leaders. Birthdays Blaine Green Blaine Green In celebration of his 80th birthday, Blaine Green of Huntsville was honored by his family. He was born May 4, 1931 in Ogden to Eitel and Laverna Green. He was raised in Kanesville and graduated from Weber High School in 1949. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy and retired from Pillsbury. He married his high school sweetheart Elaine Greenwell on October 18, 1950. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Blaine enjoys dancing, hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. His children and spouses are NaDene and Danny Allen, Sharol Dolan, Carol Elton (Gary Elton deceased), and Chad Green. He has 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Karl DeVries Karl DeVries is going to celebrate his 90th birthday on May 22, 2011. His family wishes to invite friends and neighbors to a gathering to help him celebrate. The celebration will be held at 6928 E. 200 S. in Huntsville from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Karl Devries Karl was born in Racine, Wisconsin on May 22, 1921 to Alida Dexter and Sam Devries. He married Erdria (Sue) Mathews on October 14, 1948. They have three children: Karel Love, Simon (Diane), and Mack (Chris) DeVries. He has seven grandsons and one granddaughter. Karl is an ambitious person. He started working when he was twelve years old. He gathered all the neighbors’ cows and took them down to the river bottoms in West Ogden to graze. Then, he would take them home in the evening. He also worked in a blacksmith shop, and hauled sand and gravel. He worked at Utah Ice and Storage, making ice and running a big engine. He also kept the engine repaired. Karl joined the Navy when he was 21. He was on the Ship Manila Bay. He is proud to have served our country. He is now very proud that four of his grandsons are doing the same. When he came back from the war, he decided to become a butcher. After that, he became a carpenter. He built log homes in Utah and Wyoming. He also became a welder. He is a man of many trades. Due to ill health, he became a custodian at Weber High School, and then transferred to Valley Elementary. He enjoyed that job more than any other. Karl has done a lot of traveling. He has been in every state in the U.S. but four. His favorite sports are dancing, hunting, and fishing. Now he likes to tell stories about his life. Births Brittany and Brandon Gifford Johnson of Huntsville are the parents of a baby boy born April 3, 2011. St. Florence Catholic Church First Holy Communion The celebration of First Holy Communion for St. Florence 2011 was held May 1. Shown but not in order: Sydney Arena, Christina Keenan, Parker Matysik, Cole Peters, Christopher Luciano Pombo, Cade Rahe, Jayvon Weakly, Addison Wolfe, and Jenna Woodring. Along with Father Charles Cummins and Sue Hoffman. Obituaries Cloyd Thomas Our beloved father, son, brother, and friend returned home to his Heavenly Father on April 22, 2011. Cloyd was born July 26, 1974 in Ogden, Utah to William and Tennice Thomas. He grew up in Layton and graduated from Davis Cloyd Thomas High in 1992. He married Jennifer Ottley in Duchesne, Utah on January 12, 1995. They were later divorced. Cloyd started at the early age of 18 installing carpet in St. George, and later became the owner of “Cloyd’s Floor Store” in Price. His innate talent as an installer allowed him to achieve the respect and overwhelming compliments of his hard work. He was a perfectionist in all that he did. His other passion was motorcycles. He loved to ride with his son and friends. He was a self-taught drummer and played in a band and passed that passion on to his son Cole. He loved the outdoors, camping, and fishing with his family. Shellie Lynae Turner Shellie Lynae Turner, 45, passed away suddenly on April 28, 2011 in her home at 5106 Frontier Drive in Mountain Green, Utah. Shellie was born July 3, 1965 in The Shellie Turner Dalles, Oregon to Gary C. Harmon and Cherri Peat. She attended The Dalles High School, Columbia Gorge Community College, and The College of Myotherapy in Salt Lake City, Utah. Shellie Turner was a loving member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Cottonwood Creek Ward in Mountain Green. She was a licensed Massage Therapist and enjoyed healing others. Her interests included working with animals, mineral hunting, skiing, camping, biking, hiking, shopping, and the Cloyd lived a long life in a short number of years. He will be remembered best for his honesty and hard work. He was very outgoing and had a smile for everyone, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Cloyd was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Cloyd leaves behind his children: Sharise (Joe) Castagna, Brooke (Harley) Thomas, and Cole Thomas; his parents, William and Tennice Thomas, Layton; his siblings: Robert (Eileen) Thomas, Eden; Steven (Carolyn) Thomas, Roy; Jason (Cynthia) Thomas, Roy; Kerry Thomas, Montana; Jennifer (Dave) Marsh, N. Ogden; Danene (Donald) Philips, Perry; many extended family, and a special friend, Christy Jaramillo of East Carbon. He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Thomas; grandparents Austin and Helen Thomas, James Jamieson, and Blaine and Laura Green. Graveside services were held Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at the Kaysville City Cemetery, 500 E. Crestwood Road. . Funeral services entrusted to Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road. Her favorite thing to do was to spend time with her family and friends, who she loved and loved her, so dearly. She is survived by her husband Ken Turner and son Nate Turner of Mountain Green; sons Terryn and Tyler Lee of Ogden; daughter Chelsea Lee of Ogden; brothers Shaun Harmon, Petaluma, CA; Shan Harmon, Vancouver, WA; Sheldon Harmon, Ridgefield, WA; and sisters Shauna Keim, Sherwood, OR and Amy Rice, Sacramento, CA; Deborah Miller, Sacramento, CA; her father, Gary and wife Donna Harmon, Yreka, CA; and her mother, Cherri Peat and husband Mel Peat, Pahrump, NV. Shellie’s Memorial Service was held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5378 W. Old Highway Rd., Mountain Green, May 14, 201.
