Show Volume XIV Issue XXII The Ogden Valley news Page September 1, 2007 Letters to the Editor AMERICAN INDIAN cont. from page 8 the status quo—it seems we have lost sight of the fact that while the truth oft times is very painful, it will set one free. Whereas no sensible person would condone exposing grade school or Sunday school children to what this paper’s editor views as a “negative, demeaning show of behavior associated with an elected official, and the democratic process that both adults and teachers extol as the ideal American way,” it is incumbent that they graduate from fairytales and tall tales, to the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. The truth of the matter is that this latest fracas was no exception to the rule and the rule in the past brought about some of the most terrible of atrocities that can befall a race of people. The whole truth is that our founding fathers made some very unsound decisions that brought about horrific consequences. Nothing but the truth is that history will repeat itself unless we the paleface do an about face. If one is going to call himself or herself a true American, a true Saint, then he or she is going to have to climb down off his or her own high horse long enough to give deluded youth the time to regain some stature and composure; to forgive those responsible of hiding a past wherein lies their own future. Are you sincere enough to instill in your children, in yourself, a sense of appreciation and honor so deserving of a people who sacrificed everything so we could worship and live as we see fit? Enough beating around the bush; when will American Indian Day also be celebrated as an “ideal American way”?!! Henry Thoreau On the Duty of Civil Disobedience: They who know of no purer sources of truth, who have traced up its stream no higher, stand, and wisely stand, by the Bible and Constitution, and drink at it there with reverence and humility; but they who behold where it comes trickling into this lake or that pool, gird up their loins once more, and continue their pilgrimage towards its fountain-head. Black Elk in Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: I did not know then how much was ended. I look back now from this high hill of my old age, I can still see the butchered woman and children lying heaped and scattered all along the crooked gulch as plain as when I saw them with eyes still young. And I can see that something else died there in the bloody mud, and was buried in the blizzard. A people’s dream died there. It was a beautiful dream . . . the nation’s hoop is broken and scattered. There is no center any longer, and the sacred tree is dead. Thank you for hearing out what has so heavily laden my own heart so that now I can get back to fulfilling my own dream—a bountiful garden in Eden. And if perchance, while weeding out all my own thorns and thistles, I should hear “the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden”; then maybe, just maybe, I will not have to hide myself, be embarrassed nor ashamed standing as it were, naked before my creator.
