Local Writers Host Groundbreaking Writers’ Conference in Eden Eden Writers, Inc. is hosting the First Annual Eden Writers’ Fall Conference on October 19 and 20 at the Red Moose Lodge in Eden. Drienie Hattingh, whose heartwarming stories, articles, and interviews grace the pages of magazines and newspapers throughout the country and overseas says, “Ever since I arrived in Eden, I had a dream of having a writers’ conference in our Valley. It is the perfect place for writers to come and be inspired to write that book they’ve always wanted to write.” When Hattingh arrived in the Valley five years ago, she immediately started a writer’s group—The Eden Writers’ Circle. After belonging to several writers’ organizations in Minnesota where she previously lived, she says she wanted to bring those experiences to writers in the Valley. The writing group presently consists of seven members—Drienie Hattingh, Wendy Toliver, Barb Emanuelson (Passaris), Dimitria Van Leeuwen, Kera Erickson, Mike Combe, and Jenifer Poe. Drienie thinks that the success of the Eden Writers’ Circle lies in the fact that the members all write in different genres—from memoir, to historical romance, and young adult. Hattingh continues, “When two of the writers in my writers group (Eden Writers’ Circle) sold their books, I knew the time had come for the conference. I not only wanted a “writers workshop,” it had to be a literary event—a memorable writers conference. I wanted to bring a high caliber of writers to the conference with top-notch agents and editors from New York, and seasoned and well respected presenters. What better place for writers of all genres and all levels of writing skills to mingle and soak up inspiration than in Eden?” Hattingh states that she and two additional members of the writing group—Wendy Toliver and Barbara Passaris—have been busy planning the event ever since. “And how absolutely amazing it has been . . .,” says Hattingh. “Local residents and businesses have embraced the idea and they’ve been very supportive.” Japanese students visiting from Nagoya participate in service project along with Eden youth group.
