Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 10 “"=" June 15, 2006 Muslims and Mormons Work Together to Rush Aid to Indonesia Quake Victims Islamic Relief Worldwide and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are working together to provide urgently needed medical supplies to victims of the devastating earthquake that struck Indonesia on Saturday, May 27. More than eight semitruckloads of 747 cargo jet Food was purchased by Church leaders immediately following the earthquake. Food items were then prepared into meals and delivered to victims of the Indonesia earthquake. Photo by Karen Bryner p for the thousands injured in Saturday’s disaster: first-aid supplies, materials for making casts to set broken arms and legs, walkers, canes, crutches, warm weather clothing for hospital patients, and hygiene kits. These materials are being provided in close coordination with Indonesian government officials. Arrangements were in place to transport these badly needed items to the disaster area immediately upon arrival in Indonesia Islamic Relief Worldwide assisted with on-site distribution. Government officials and other observers are calling the quake one of the worst in Indonesia’s history. The 6.3 magnitude quake struck Saturday morning on the Indian Ocean coast near Yogyakarta killing thousands and leaving tens of thousands injured and homeless. The United Nations reports more than 40% of the injured and homeless are children. Church leaders and members in Indonesia also moved quickly to respond effectively to their government’s urgent appeal for help. Within hours of the quake, Church members had prepared and served over 2,000 meals to those in need in the stricken area. The Church also provided food to other organizations providing relief in nearby communities. Hygiene kits, assembled by Indonesian LDS church members and others, were quickly distributed. Cots, mattresses, and blankets were purchased locally and provided to an orthopedic hospital where hundreds came seeking medical attention. Generous donations to the Church’s humanitarian fund combined with volun- oy awarded $25 each for writing a thoughtful and winning essay around the theme, “How I Can Maintain and Use Ogden Valley Pathways Trails.” We congratulate essay winners and commend them for their fine words. Winners were Ariel Froerer, Caleb Naumu, Cassi Cosby, Cheyenne Tanner, Haley Duffin, Lenora Ramsey, Maddie Jenkins, Marley Keith, Paige Brooks, and Trevor Smith. In conjunction with the essay contest, 6th Graders at Valley Elementary participated in a nature walk and cleanup in May. Tt contributed to keeping the Valley beautiful by collecting garbage and puller dyers woad along the trail. A USFS employee guided the hikes along Pineview West Trail. Teachers Ms. Evans, Ms. Hogge, and Mr, Weight joined in on the fun. Thank you 6th graders for your efforts! i _ FA ‘ Pathways enthusiasts gather to celebrate National Trails Day. Many who stopped by our booth at the North Arm Trailhead were greeted and photographed with Smokey the Bear. He enjoyed meeting many children and was escorted by Law Enforcement Officer Linda Peterson. Winners of our children’s raffle were Taylor Booth, Ethan Kent Snyder, Elizabeth Dowell, Jayden Martin, Malone Peterson, and Miriam Ricks. Having needed materials readily at-hand enables the Church to respond quickly to relieve suffering among the most needy during crisis situations. Church leaders in Indonesia report that all missionaries are safe. Among Church members, no deaths had been reported though a few sustained minor injuries.
