Show = THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS)“ July 15, 2004 What a Way to Spend the 4th of July! By Drienie Hattingh Samoaea 4 exists A place where sky scraping building tops Mountains! Wild Flowers! Blue Utah Skis, and beyond— far below—a green Valley with a blue, blue lake! I felt like Heidi in a story that I read as a child — Heidi of the Mountains. It played off in Austria or Switzerland. It was about a little girl who lived in Alpine mountains with her grandfather. Later the book was a television production, and where I was sitting on a rock, between endless wild flowers and snow capped mountain peaks, inhaling fresh, crisp mountain air, it looked exactly like Heidi’s beloved mountains. In the story, Heidi had to go and live with family in the city when her grandfather was too old to take care of her and she became ill because she missed her mountains so much. Where I sat on that awesome afternoon high up on Mount Ogden all alone, I believed that one could very well get ill if you have lived between such mountains all your life and then had to go and live in a big city. The Needles Express Gondola carries visitors 2,310 vertical feet on an exciting 15-minute ride to the top of the mountain. The gondola runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, including major holidays during Snowbasin's summer season between June 25 and September 26. Operating hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Adults can ride for $8.00; children between 7 and 12, for $5.00. Children 6 and under ride free. All day bike passes for adults are $12.00; a child's, $10.00. Summer season passes and locker rentals are also available. For more information, or to book a special event, please call 801-620-1000, or visit <www.snowbasin.com> RRR AOL was covered in smog instead of sky scraping mountain tops covered with snow. Where dirty sidewalks are lined with garbage instead of mountain trails lined wild flowers. Where you fill a glass with strange tasting water—not sure of its content and origin— instead of water that you know that comes from clean springs, streams, and rivers full of snow melt from the high mountain peaks surrounding your Valley. A place where every breath you take is filled with countless foul origins instead of pure, fresh alpine mountain air. Snowbasin's Needles Lodge located at the top of the Needles Express Gondola sits at 8,710 feet, just below the summit of the resort. From the lodge, visitors can access over 25 miles of groomed trails, enjoy breathtaking views of Ogden Valley, and picnic on the lodge's outdoor plaza. Restrooms and telephones are available. Children’s laughter awakened me from my reverie. A young family walked past me and the father called out to me, “Isn’t this beautiful?” I yelled back, “Incredible!” Then the little girl shouted, “It’s my birthday tomorrow. I’m going to be ten years old!” I laughed at her exited young voice at this wonderful prospect on this beautiful day, and I yelled back, “Congratulations! It’s my husband’s birthday too!” Their good wishes drifted up to me as the little girl and her brother ran ahead toward a patch of snow on the side of the trail. They dug their hands into the snow, squealing at the coldness. Then their father joined them and he started throwing snowballs at them. A snowball fight in July! I sat mesmerized at the scene and the joy and beauty that surrounded me. I stood up very slowly and turned. Gravity wanted to make me topple over. I looked up the mountain to the very top work. He has added many biographies, cen- sus, and family records and pictures. Loris Felt Allen then joined the effort and added to the records, concentrating on a collection of history about David O. McKay. Jean Crezee Johnson helped with and added historical writings that she collected. Beatrice Peterson helped for a time organizing birth records. Mae Rawlins Jorgensen kept updated records on obituaries, weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries. Sheryl The Cirque Loop offers hiking trails for oi ages and abilities. One of the less strenuous trails leaves and returns from the Needles Lodge. From the trail enjoy incredible views, wildflowers, and possibly some of the local wildlife! Most of the over 25 miles of trails average a comfortable 5% grade. But if you're interested in a more aggressive adventure, try taking one of two trails for hiking only that leads to the crest of the ridge for a breathtaking view of Ogden Valley nestled far below. It is possible to hike and scramble along the ridge between the tops of these two trails. Hiking is permitted on all Snowbasin and contiguous U.S. Forest Service trails. where snow glistened in the afternoon sun and where Johan stood against a powder blue ski, waving at me. He had climbed right to the top and had a view from both sides of the mountain—Ogden and our Valley. He was too far away for me to see his expression but I’m sure he had a look of ecstasy on his face. On the eve of his ssth birthday, he stood on top of a mountain! And the mountain was fifteen minutes from our house. Sitting on our porch we can see this very mountaintop where Johan was now standing! While Johan started down the mountain, I watched as several families hiked the trail beyond me. Young families with little children and families with toddlers on fathers’ backs and even, what looked to me, like a recently born baby carried by his mother in her arms, and older families with teenagers and a family that consisted of grandparents, parents, babies, toddlers and teenagers. And quite a few empty nesters, like Johan and me, strolling along this flower lined trail in the Wasatch Mountains. A young father showed his little boy how to form a snowball and a mother told her children as they 4TH OF JULY cont. on page 10 UO NLA ARS NO ee Over 15 YEARS Experience Selling Real Estate in Ogden Valley! 3404 N. The pump organ in this photo came from the Huntsville Hotel called the Valley House, which was located across the street from the Huntsville Town Hall. The hotel was built and owned by L. M. Nelson, the first mayor of Huntsville. He died in an accident in the 1920's. Matilda Sprage then ran the hotel until it was turned over to Myrtle Capson, the granddaughter of Matilda Sprage. Needing money for a trip, Myrtle and Albert Capson sold the organ to Adrien and Grace Janet for $20. It had been in their home until being recently placed in the History Library. Stromberg Andrews took over that work, and made indexes to the material. Carson McKay now is organizing the collection and helped with the arrangements for use of the building that now houses the new library, which the town has owned since 1952. The building was recently remodeled. New cabinets for the books are being built. A counter, computer, and computer desk are also in the plans for future acquisition. When asked why preserving our history is so important, Wangsgaard explained, “I think it’s more important now that so many new people are living in the Valley. Young people who are moving here and are active participants in the community may not have a sense of the history and feel that they should—a feel of how those who proceeded us lived and worked, and the conditions surrounding them, especially up through the depression. During those difficult years, few knew that they were poor because most lived in the same conditions. Most didn’t have indoor plumbing or electricity.” Visitors are welcome to the history library. It is open to the public on Tuesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., or by appointment. For more information, or to make an appointment, contact Stanley Wangsgaard at 7451817 or (801) 328-1358.
