Marek Mitchell of Huntsville has been selected to participate in the National Young Leaders Conference (NYLC) in Washington, D.C. July 26 through August 5, 2004. NYLC is a unique leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. Mitchell will be one of approximately 350 outstanding scholars from around the country at the conference. Marek Mitchell The theme of NYLC is The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today. Throughout the ten days he will spend in Washington, D.C., Mitchell will have the opportunity to interact with a variety of personnel who operate within the three branches of government, the news media, and the international community. “We often hear from members of Congress, political appointees, and members of Washington’s press corps that it is a privilege to meet and interact with students like Mitchell because they are the face of our country’s future, “‘ said Mike Lasday, executive director of the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, the organization that sponsors the Conference. “What these students learn at the National Yong Leaders Conference will enable them to build coalitions with one another and exercise their own leadership skills within communities around the country.” Highlights of past conferences have included welcoming remarks from the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives and a panel discussion with prominent journalists at the National Press Club, in addition to meeting with senators and representative or appointed staff members to discuss important issues facing the nation. To complement the schedule of special meetings and briefings, Mitchell will also participate in a number of leadership skillbuilding activities and simulations. In one role-play activity titled “If 1 Were President,” students act as the president and cabinet members responding to an international crisis. Students also participate in “Testing the Constitution,” in which they examine actual Supreme Court cases. The Conference culminates with the “Model Congress,” in which scholars assume the roles of U.S. Representative, and debate, amend, and vote on proposed mock legislation. CYLC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization. Founded in 1985, the council is committed to fostering and inspiring young people to achieve their full leadership potential. More than 400 members of the U.S. Congress join this commitment by servin on the YLC Honorary Congressional Board of Advisors. The library is located between Huntsville’s Rendezvous Lodge and the Town Hall in the historic building that formerly housed Dr. Wikstrom’s medical practice that serviced early residents of the Valley. Local historian Stanley Wangsgaard stated that many have contributed to the abundance of historical material covering Ogden Valley and Ogden Canyon that has been preserved and is now available to visitors to the library. “Grateful appreciation is extended to Erma Hartley Wilson who worked tirelessly for several years, faithfully collecting, organizing, and filling the library’s enormous collection of history. Located just west of Lincoln Avenue, Ume’ is an eclectic shop featuring clothing, shoes, jewelry, and handbags unique to the area. Janet Peters owner of Ume. Peters, previously a senior bank executive from California, and her husband owned a vacation home in Liberty prior to moving permanently to the area two years ago. “After 9/11, we reprioritized our lives,” said Peters. Starting with trunk shows selling fun purses and jewelry, her business became wildly successful due to the uniqueness she brought. This month, Ume’ opened its retail location which bombards the senses with lots of color when you walk in. “Once something sells out, that’s it,” said Peters. “We don’t want women to run into each other wearing the same thing.” A couple of things were important to Peters when opening the store, including a fun atmosphere, a good database and inventory system, and a place were husbands and other “tag-a-longs” could relax and not pressure their shopping partners to hurry up. Everyone is welcome at the “guy bar,” where she serves soft drinks and offers plenty of newspapers and magazines that are on hand. “Tt’s exciting to watch 25th Street grow and flourish,” said Kym Buttschardt, owner of Roosters 25th Street Brewery and Union Grill. “We’re pleased to have another quality retailer on Historic 25th Street with such diverse and unique merchandise.” Ume’ features unique events in addition to its offerings. In order to ensure the freshness of Ume’ merchandise, the last Saturday of the month is Sensation Saturday sale day. Loyal clients are rewarded with Diva Club benefits, and private shopping after-hour parties are booked well in advance. Naming the shop was the easy part. Having a strong sense of loyalty to her Japanese heritage, and being the dreamer in the family, the name was a natural fit. The logo is named Keiko, a rendering of her mother. According to Peters, she found the perfect spot on Historic 25th Street. Asian influence on the street now includes two new sushi bars as well as the legendary icon, Star Noodle.
