Show Freshman Grew Up "At The Summit Volume HI Hits The Streets Student Writer: Chasidy Blncksher The halls at South Summit High Tilled up quickly with many students this 1999 to 2000 school year, and as the year draws to a close many people wonder what life was like with a new class added to the ranks. Crowded halls were due to the Freshman moving into the high school for the first time in many yean. The freshman were moved because of the construction at the middle school. The journalism staff was curious about what some of the students thought about the freshman, so we asked. The question was asked to a person from each grade. Chelsea Page's Freshman stated.' I think it's a good idea, if they are all mature enough to handle it." Sophomore Shauna Walker answered 1 think is a good idea because they are closer to the Seminary building and other classes over here, but on the downside it is really crowded." Junior Teresa Simmons replied, "The Freshman are somewhat ready for high school, but a large portion of them are not. "The pressures of dating and high school life are too much for most of them." Senior Kurt Walker commented, I don't have a problem with them, but the high school has a hall system which makes them easier to walk through and the Freshmen did not understand this at first." The general consensus seems to be that the Freshmen are okay when they can act like young adults. Producer of Volume III MAt The Summit, Becky Dees is the English Sterling Scholar for the 1999-200- 0 year. Student Writer: Brianna Bishop The smell of freshly published print filled the South Summit High School office this last week in April which of course means that it is that lime of year again, "At The Summit" the literary magazine is out with it's third edition. Three dollars will buy you a unique look at 31 different school writers who have created 39 poems and 4 stories. It is a somewhat an unusual accomplishment for the school because this is the kind of thing that you usually see only at larger schools. "At The Summit" is available for at the South Summit High School office and this year's price is the best yet due to the contributions of several local sponsors. "At The Summit," has been a literary project for The Sterling Scholar program for four years now. The sometimes daunting task of editing hundreds of pieces of writing and word processing an entire book stake on each year by the English Sterling Scholar. This year's Sterling Scholar Becky Dees who was behind the whole project commented with relief, "It feels really good to have it completely finished and published," "I'm happy with the way it turned out. It has the professional appearance I was looking for." High School students, if you are looking for something that is great for your portfolio, scholarship, or reference etc. you might want to consider submitting your creative writing to the magazine. English Teacher Mark Doherty stakes," This really is quite a nice feather in a students literary cap." Plan ahead, volume four gets published next year1. Could Not Have Asked For More I Time To Prepare Student Writer: Ruby Johnson Student Writer: Lena Rider The Juniors are getting dressed up for the big day of Junior Prom which is this Saturday night. April 22. The theme for this year is. I Could Not Have Asked For More" inspired by the music of Edwin McCain. The ever popular promenade dance which features all of the handsomely and stylishly dressed Junior Class has been choreographed to the music of "Back To Your Heart" by the Backstreet Buys; it will take place at I0:(X). This year's prom tickets will cost fifteen dollars per couple and eight dollars for a single. All of the money made after decorations are paid for will be funds raised for next year's all night drug free graduation party. The prom starts at 9 p.m. in the SSHS boys gym which has been magically transformed into a far away place. A professional photographer will be on hand throughout the evening to take prom pictures, but just like the American Express commercials that say, "Don't leave home without it," students need to bring money if they want pictures. The time has come to begin preparing fur our futures; it is a time to think about next year's classes, and a lime to think about college and scholarships. And I don't mean Seniors. I mean freshmen and sophomofes! The time is now. We must think of our futures, and prepare for them. College is coming up soon for many of us. Are you ready? I believe that it is important for each student from about Ninth Grade and up to begin planning fur their future at college or for the work force, and this doesn't mean seeing how many fun electives we can get in before we have to take all the hard stuff. Next year I will be a sophomore. In order for me to he able to have all the classes I need in by my Senior year I am taking two math classes. and Geometry Algebra II, Chemistry, ar. 1 all the other required classes even before becoming a Junior. My next goal is to get ready for AP English and AP History. Physics and Calculus in order to get into a great college and get out of a few of those required college courses. Attending college may be a major part of most high school students plans for the future, as are mine, but even if college isn't in the plans these classes are down right useful in the real world. Maybe these classes are the most important because they may be the last bit of education some people get. But for those of us going on to college, Juniors and Seniors may take Ed Net (college classes online) to get a head start on their college career. So get your act together, and get a good start on the rest of your life. SuBscriBe 1 o cIfk (Bee! Data Collector Summer Seasonal. Summit county is currently recruiting for a seasonal Data Collector.
