Show April 24, 2000 The Summit County Bee North Summit Underage Drinking Increases When The Weather Turns Warm Antiunderage Drinking Campaign To Target Youth During High School Spring Break Highway Safely is launching a campaign lo prevent underage drinking, in lime for high school spring break and graduation. The campaign features billboards and awardwinning radio ads of four young people who talk about the real consequences of diinking alcohol. According to John Dame, Office of High ay Safety. Spring weather seems to invite more underage drinking especially during spring break, graduation and weekends. We are concerned because as the radio ads describe, alcohol abuse can lead youth to lose control and get involved in things that they normally wouldn't do such as robbery and sexual assault. Lieutenant Andy Burton, Salt Lake County Sheriff s Office, says, When the weather is warm, young people tend to go to parks or up the canyon to drink on Friday and Saturday nights. There is an increased potential for youth to be involved in car crashes, criminal activity or delinquency. This results in arrests and injuries. According to Dame. Youth do not realize that after one lo two drinks they increase their risk of being in a crash by seven times. After four to six drinks, youth are 90 times more at risk. Dame says. Although the number of Utah's underage drinkers is under the, national average, parents and communities should still be concerned. Over 200,000 thousand students grades seven through 12 will be on spring break. Based on the percentages of Students who reported drinking in the Utah Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), we know thousands of kids will be drinking. Neck Call or Back Pain? the Expert. Dr. Chad A. Of those students who reported drinking alcohol during the past 30 days. 63 percent (32,676) reported there was at least one day where they had consumed five or more drinks in a row. which is considered binge drinking. The YRBS also shows that Utah students begin drinking at an early age. Over 17 percent of students who reported drinking, said they had their first drink of alcohol, other than a few sips, before age 13. Tracy Crowell, president of Crowell A Associates that produced the campaign ads. said, We have found that youth respond more to straightforward messages from their peers. With that in mind, our agency found four young people who were willing to share their compelling stories of how alcohol compromised their lives. The antiunderage drinking radio ads received a national 1999 Silver Microphone Award for best public service message. They will air this spring on youthoriented stations in Utah. The ads were funded by a Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
