AH three cases are asso ciated with exposure to an international traveler-an- d are the first reported cases of measles in Utah since 1996. The Bureau of Epidemiology received confirmation on a measles case in an employee of a Park City medical clinic. Two weeks prior to the patient's illness, the clinic had provided medical care to a 21 year old suspected measles case that had competed in a snow boarding competition where exposure may have occurred. The Bureau is investigating a third suspect who is also an employee of the clinic and may have been exposed to the 21 year old. Measles is a highly communicable viral disease with fever, conjunctivitis, cough and spots on the buccal mucosa. The virus can be found in the nose and throat secretions of infected people. Direct contact with these secretions or exposure to the R COPY i cough or sneeze of an infected person can spread the disease. Symptoms of the disease is characterized by a red blotchy rash that appears on the third to seventh day. beginning on the face. It usually lasts about one to two weeks and can cause complications such as pneumonia, ear infections and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). Measles can be prevented: 1. Children should have had both doses of measles vaccine at the appropriate ages. 2. People exposed to measles should check their immunization record or consult their physician or local health department to see if they need a protective vaccination. 3. People who are suspected of having measles should he separated from gathering places and from people who aren't immune. This includes exclusion from public settings such as day care centers, church gatherings, schools or work.
