After inspecting the splendid exhibit of what is produced: in San Diego county, the reception committee and the mayor of 8an Diego, Mr. J. L. took us aboard the car. The first place we visited was Hem ley's Ostrich farm, consisting of 87 birds. It was indeed a novel sight for us to see these giants of the Arabian desert. They are beautiful birds and some measured over six feet in height. Their chief defense is a forward stroke with the leg, and la so powerful that only one blow is sufficient to kill a man. The keeper said that the only objection he had to birds were that they kick about lour times as hard as a mule, and three times as fast. The male is black and white, and the female is of a grayish brown color. The eggs are hatched in incubators, weigh 3ft pounds, and it takes 42 days to hatch them. The birds are plucked every ninth month, and the feathers sell for from 210 to 200 per pound. The birds are fed on small oranges mostly; they dont chew them, they swallow them whole, and you can see the orange travel down that neck. The ostrich lives to be about 65 years old. , Then on we went through a most delightful landscape, up to University Park. From here we had a beautiful view of Falls Mission bay. Thursday, 17, May after ' a good nights rest at Hotel New York, we Horn-beck were invited by Manager K. A. of the National City and Olay railroad, to take a trip to Tia Juana in Old Mexico, and, of course, we didn't say no. At 9 a. m., we met at Fifth street station and boarded the train. On this trip we were piloted by Senator M. L. Ward. R. J. Walsh, James A. Jasper and other prominent citizens. By the way here is what Mr. Jasper said in an interview with a representative of The San Diego Union, and which was printed In that paper: These Mormons, as you newspaper chaps call them, are the brainiest set of people that have been in town for some time. They have had good times ever since they started on this trip, but from what they told me, this was the climax. I never saw people enjoy their pleasures as these Utah people did. They told me they had had.no warmer welcome than in nd stayed an hour. Here we bought curloa, donned sombreros and blankets, inspected mescal officially photoand were again graphed." In these robes we felt and looked like a bunch of hot tomales. Tia Juana is only a little hamlet consisting of about a dozen frame houses, and situated 17 miles from San Diego. The flood of 1884 swept away many houses, thus destroying many relics of the past which would have been appreciated today. The town has been rebuilt and there are now curio stores where can be purchased fine Indian etc. pottery, Mexican drawn-worWe visited the Custom House, where we were officially examined, not phoOn our tographed, thank goodness. return to the train we stopped at one of the largest of the many monuments which marks the boundary line between the United States and Mexico, where we had our picture taken, ''officially of course, with one foot in Mexico, and the other in the United Slates. Upon returning to San Diego, 12 20 p. m., we partook of luncheon and at 3 o'clock went down to the Santa Fe wharf and boarded the U. B. San Diego. J. Du Hussey, which which Major Woodward, commander at Fort Rosecrans. had placed at our disposal. We visited the quarantine station and then went to the fort. Here we spent much of the afternoon, being shown the sights by Major Woodward and his lieutenants. The official photographer, of course, left his camera behind, having been previously admonished that Uncle Sam did not like to have his picture taken. At 5:10 the party and returned to the city. The fort Is situated 8 miles from San Diego across the bay. Upon leaving Fort Ilosecians wharf three rousing cheers were given Major Woodward and the coast artillery. On our return we passed Point Lorn a where thu famous lighthouse and the stagovernment wireless telegraph tion is located. We didn't experience seasickness on this trip. That unspeakable feeling was left for some of us to enjoy on our trip to Catalina Island. Immediately upon our arrival we embarked on a ferry for Coronado, and spent the evening and night at Hotel del Coronado, which Is one of g A. Richter, H h West HOUSTON REAL E8TATE 2d So. r.
