Gurr was a senior at Union High chool when I was a sophomore in 969 (back then freshmen attended Oosevelt Junior High), and it was lie final year of the Courtesy Corps, diich was basically an unofficial po-c- a force at Union. They didnt arrest ny one as they told everyone, which Iways seemed to be a clueless sopho-iorthe proper rules of conduct in re school such as no running in the all, noflippinggum intoapoorgirl's air or between pages of a U.S. His-r- y textbook in a class being taught y Evans Phillips or using bad tane, nage. The Courtesy Corpsof seniors wore lin gold blasers to tie into Union's :hool colors of black and gold. Some fthe blazer wearingseniors refused i talk to a lowly sophomore, but urr wasn't that way. He was nice to wryone. During my sophomore year I was Iso a 150 pound offensive linemen ling up against big guys in the 200 mnd range during football team youta. I delivered a few good blocks, ut usually at the end of the day I was ttingon the bench wonderingaftur rough morning workout if I was ling to make it through a dreadful reningsession. Lineman Gurr didn't ly more than a few words, but it was imething like: Hang In There!" Those words of encouragement elped me get through the tryouts. I dnl make the varsity team (no iphomore football team back tlunl, it I realized I was better at watch-ig- , writing and focusing. I became le sports editor at the Union school 4 newspaper, and then at the Vernal Express and Uintah Basin Standard. In 19691 watched Gurr as well as Bob Fenn, Bill Labrum, Ricky Mojado, Jon Bingham, etc. play football. I wasnt able to see Brad Hancock play because he was suffering from a bro-ke- n shoulder. However, in 200 1 1 saw his son Cole Hancock play the sport for the Cats. I was introduced to a police chief at an early when I was 3years old. I wanted to watch my dad, Orlando Rachele play baseball at the old park. Instead I headed to Lynn Labrums L & L Motor. I guess I wanted a Mustang. However, I didnt have a driver's license. A few minutes later I gained a free ride in Chief Dave Roberts' police car. I was scared to tell him my name. I finally confessed that I was lost. My mother, Ann Rachele was happy to see me. I paid for my ride all the way through grade school. Dave would stop me on the street and in front of my friends he would say, "I thought you were adogand I was going to run over you, but I changed my mind." My friends (might have been Danny Mitchie or Randell Sullivan) would always say, "He is still a dog. My mother suffers from Alzheimers Disease, but back around 1 992 or 1993 during the early stages of the illness she was still able to walk, and one day she took off when we left her alone with my aunt in Price, Utah. We called the Price City police and a search ended happily when Ann said, "A Nice Policeman Gave Me A Ride!" She probably thought the officer was her brother Mike Blanusa, who ' was a law officer for more than 30 years. After quittingmy sports job atihe Vernal Express due toxbroken ankle a news reporter said, "Bob Downard Vernal Chief of Police is a part-tim- e e and a sports editor at the Vernal Express.
