It was the second day of the NCAA Basketball Tournament with count them 16 games, all in one day plus Duchesne State boys, Altamont girls at the Basketball Meet, a Union baseball game and Lady Cougar softball contest. The schedule for sports fans on March 12 was: 11:30a.m., Duchesne vs. Juab at the Meet; 3 p.m., girls softball game; 3:30 p.m. .Union baseball team vs. Moffat; 4:30 p.m., State Altamont vs. Beaver at Hoop Meet; 5 p.m., Union softball varsity vs. North Sanpete; 6 p.m., Utah vs. San Francisco at the NCAA Meet Some fans attended the State Tournament in person. Others had to use a radio to find out the latest on Duchesne's boys and Altamont girls down in Cedar City. . Just getting the right radio is a majorjob. The old style equipmentsomething out of the 1930s with gigantic speakers, pull out turn table for the old 45s to listen to such classic tunes as "Lady of Spain, Duke of Earl, "The Purple People Eater', Battle of New Orleans, and Old Cowhand On The Rio Grande, and a glass dial with large numbers that appeared to be better suited for listening to War of the Worlds" or The Shadow isnt mobile and is difficult to balance on your head. Next choice for listening to the game is a radiocassette unit with headphones that have a long cord. Only problem is a person feels attached to the unit and sometimes a slight movement can disconnect a person from the ball game. Finally, the best way to listen to a game when not in person is the headphoneradio setup. Only problem is chewing some noisy food like carrots can cause signal trouble when moving the head up and down. Basketball tourney play is over, but there is a one or two week period where a sports fan can eqjoy the last days of hoop play and the start of baseballsoftball action all at the same time, which makes for an unusual experience. Example: The Altamont girls game began at 4:30 p.m. in Cedar s City, and at the same time miles away Union was involved in a baseball game vs. Moffat County. No problem due to the handy head 2-- A 2-- A phone radio! Not completely true, there were some problems. 1 had my radio plugged in my ears, and I listened to the hoop game while watching the baseball contest right in front of my eyes. The guy doing the basketball game insisted on using baseball terms while covering the girls contest. He said, She is going for the home run, to describe a three-poiattempt. A longdistance three-point nt bomb in a basketball game is often compared to someone belting a long shot over the fence for a homer in the sport of baseball. Mr. Radio Guy kept talking about how someone was close to the baseline, and I looked up at the third base line to see what was going on. A runner scored, ant; I waited for my radio buddy to give me the details, and soon realized that I had my ball games mixed up. Listening to a basketball game while watching a live baseball game is difficult to do, but it keeps a person on his toes, ready for a driving slam dunk or a mighty jolt over the fence for a home run. 2-- A 2-- A 300-plu- Duchesne Girls Softball one-poi- nt gion meet, and then lost to Enterprise down south. The Enterprise team went onto place third at state, and upset Juab, which had just one loss prior to the meeting between the two. Wrestling state tournaments Over the weekend, 14 members of the Roosevelt community wrestling team participated in the State Grecco Tournament. State champions include, Chuck Genereaux, Steven Harmston, Thomas Carter and Anthony Carter. Second place medals went to Joshua Liddell and Brandon Grover. Third place honors went to Jason Hollobaugh and Chris Carter. Fourth place medal went to Bob Richins. 5th place honors went to Duane Foote and Cameron Cook.
