By Cheiyl Mecham East Elementary school's playground equipment has been found to be unsafe and does not meet ADA (American's Disability Act) standards according to the State Department of Risk Management,-saiEast's principal Carol Parrish. There is one piece we could keep, the and the swing will have to be modified. The slide we just purchased will have to go, Parrish said. To bring the playground up to standards more Burface gravel will be added and sidewalks will be constructed to provide access to equipment. All in all, Parrish says it will cost a lot of money to create a safer and more accessible playground, a minimum of $30,000. The PTA and school will work to raise the money through fund raising efforts. Parrish said East Elementary kids will be selling candy for Easter, and the PTA has pledged all of the money they receive for various fund raising events throughout the year to the playground project. Parrish said the school district has promised to support the fund raising efforts w ith matching funds for the new playground, and she will meet with the district April 1 'with a needs list. It is imperative, Parrish reported, that the school comply with the regulations as Boon as possible, be merry-go-roun- d, cause the school will be fined $1,000 per year as long as they remain in 16-20- seasoned 538-471- 8. violation.
