The Linotype was used to set stories and advertisements for the Free Press during its 14 years of publication. A front page letter of introduction outlined the tabloid newspaper, its purpose and goals for Duchesne. What ads were in the first issue ' were mostly hand drawn, and news was scarca. Subsequent issues, however, draw heavy support from the community, welcoming a .local paper again after a lapse of 10 Januny ness. Hie Eagle was published for a total of five months. With the purchase of the Eagle by the Standard, the name was changed to the Duchesne Record, reviving one of the oldest newspaper names in the Basin. The first issue, June 9, 1966; listed Goldie Wilcken as editor, and Clarin Ashby aa publisher. The Record began with a strong editorial voice, and covered local news with a number of pictures and stories. Advertising support waa adequate for some time, then diminished. It waa printed as a ftill sheet newspaper, rather than tabloid like its prade- - yean. By April that year, the paper was experiencing financial difficulty, with advertising revenue failing to meet costa. An article in the issue dated April 21, stated The Eagle Still Flys, - In the second Issue, a picture of a new linotype machine waa published,- having been installed during the week at the Hie laat issue of the Eagle was dated June 2, 1966, with no mention of pending closure. However, an article in the Duchesne - paper's office in Duchesne. Mayor Mickelaon tried out the keyboard of the typesetter. One of the events reported in the Record was construction of natural gaa distribution lines in Duchesne in 1967. Also bids wen called for, and work commenced i Starvation Reservoir in May,. 1967. In the issue of July 13, 1967, an announcement was made that the Record would be consolidated with tha Uintah Basin Standard. Two reasons were given for the change: 1. Sentiment expressed five to one by subscribers wanted a return to a one-pap- Senate Passed Peace Resolution'll er county, for broader news coverage. 2. The paper had never been financially sound. When the Standard purchased the Eagle, it was deeply in debt. And although tha community offered what support it could, it just was not feasible for y a paper to survive by itself, ' .
