The Uintah Basin Record spanned a period of more than 25 years, published continually in Duchesne. It was a period of growth, a period of decline, droughts and floods, war and peace. It was a transition period in the Basin. The newspaper itself had been in existence since 1922, but for the first ten years was known as the Duchesne Courier. In 1931 owners changed the name to "The Uintah Basin Record to better reflect coverage of the paper. The first issue was dated Aug. 7, 1931. . J. P. May, who had been associated with the Roosevelt Standard as its editor many years earlier, was named as editor ofthe new Record. One of the first changes made in the paper was installing new typesetting and press equipment so that the entire paper could be compiled and printed in lifted as publisher, and C. L. editor. Guest editorials, of a national nature were included. C. L Fretwell continued as editor until July that year, when a change was made, and Georgs W. Hightower was hired to edit the paper. Mr. May was an excellent writer, having contributed editorial comment for the Courier, as well as the Myton Free Press and Roosevelt Standard for many years. In an editorial for the Record, Sept. 4, 1931, during early years of the depression, he commented, "People feel down hearted. Times are hard.
