An accurate history Only April, 1909, about 11 months after the Chieftain. The first IS months of the Record were printed at Theodore (Duchesne). At about the same time that the Record was started in Duchesne, a newspapering effort also began in Roosevelt. Although the date of the first issue of the Uinta Standard is not known, it is reported that it was during 1909. of early newspaper efforts in the newly opened reservation area is difficult to be obtained. Files of two such ventures are available, but the first volume of each, covering the first year of publication, is missing. The first known newspaper published after the reservation was opened for settlement was the Uintah Chieftain (spX ' printed in Myton, Wasatch first dated issue was Its County. May 14, 1908. An editorial in that issue states, "Beginning next week the three papers of the reservation: The Uinta Standard, Uintah Chieftain and the Duchesne Recdrd, will consolidate un ME VOLUME 9, December, 1914, suggests .that readers can renew their subscription to the Record, and Standard by paying a combined rate of $3.60. An article Feb. 6, 1915 reports that the Record was incorporated, and the Roosevelt Standard interests were sold. This coincides with the incorporation of the Standard at the same time. A reference in an issue of the Record dated June 16; 1911, indicated that a newspaper followed in 1919 by Dr. M. Markus. The first issue of the Ducheene Courier waa published May 26, 1922. According to an article in the first Courier, it had been the intention of the group forming the new company to the Duchesne Record. But objections from the public, pointing out the problems experienced by the Record for several years, and evident feelings created, prompted backers to rename the paper. The first issues carried the name C. B. Cook m editor and publisher. Then in June, 1922, Cook became publisher, and L. A. Hollenbeck wps engaged as editor. About a year later Cooks noma waa dropped from the staff box, and Hollenbeck continued to aa editor. .... , f, In October, '1923,' the paper wm purchased by George 8. Bowers and Arnold Reef Bowers wm listed as editor and manager, and later as publisher. During the mid 20a, many editorials wan carried in the of J. P. However,' the paper did not cease. Because of growth, and expanded news coverage, the name wm changed to the Uintah Basin Record, in order to reflect man frilly the extent of the papers coverage. J. P. May became editor of tha new paper, moving to Duch-aan- a from Roosevelt The naming of the new paper, to some extent, reflected ita histoiy. It retained the "Uinta name (adding an h1), recalling the Uinta Standard and Uintah Chieftain. Then the name ."Record waa revived, reflecting the many years of service the Record had given to residents of Myton, Duchesne and western Duchesne county. The papers that preceded tha Uintah Basin Record traced about 20 yeara of history in tha development of Myton and Duchesne. On difference waa noted, however, in editors. Those partici-patin- g in the Chieftain, and the Record while it waa published in Myton, were continually pushing and building tha community. After tha Record moved back to Duchesne, and during the life of tha Courier,' little information was given aa to development ofthe community. Ao an example, an early inue of the Chieftain stated, wherever the fame of the Uintah Reservation haa spread, Myton ia ngardad aa the coming business and commercial hub of the section." Another article noted, "With the coming of the road, Myton will grow lika magic." In the first issue of Chieftain, May 14, 1908. an the art- icle stated that a representative of the Chieftain had visited Theo- dors (later known m Duchesne). The report states, convinced that tha western part of the reservation is keeping pace with the eastern, middle and northern portions in print of development and improvement.
