Duchesne, Altamont, and Tabi-on- a High Schools all put their hearts into state 1A basketball tournament play last week, with up and down scoring as proof that there were no absolute champs at the playoffs in Cedw City. State tournaments may not always give the win we want, but they can certainly offer an exciting the sentiment of game-th- afs many Duchesne High School fans, after the eagles put forth some exceptional play, then fought through a record five overtimes, only to come out 2 points short of a win at their last game. Before that consequential last round, the Eagles lost to North in the first round. Summit, Coach Stan Young chalks that heartbrsaker up to tournament jitters, with the boys just not play 81-6- . ; 3, ing their best. Jason Young was the man of the hour with 23 points to his credit The Duchesne boys fared better in consolation-roun- d play, as they whipped Intermountain Christian to stay in tournament play. Final score on the contest, 54 to 46. Alan Spencer sunk the ball for 19 points, followed closely by Young with 17. The game that probably made high school basketball history was played against Rich County High. Both teams played realty well, was Coach Youngs comment, and indeed they did, with the contest finally decided after an unheard of five overtimes. A lucky break was all that made the difference for Rich, since the seoringnever did get uneven, and the eagles, tired but proud of their effort, lost by one ; Jason Young was basket, scorer king again, pulling in 83 on 84-8- 2. a heated court, with Spencer doing his part with 8L Altamont won their first round, scoringSS to Waterfords 51, giving them a spot in the consolation round. But another win for Altamont was not to be, as they lost to Their last South Summit, hopes were dashed when they lost their final round game to Piute; final score on the contest, The Tsbkma Tigers lost to a tough Beaver team in their first round, scoring 45 to Beavers 70. The Beaver team went on to win third place in the tournament, while the eagles bid state play 89-5- 6. 85-6- 7, goodbye Thursday with another loss, this time to Rich. Pulling in a little closer, Tabby lessened the spread to 11. Final score on Tabionas season exit, 71-6- 0. The Eagles played for die consolation title, dropping the contest after five overtimes to Rich, 84 to t Cougars end season at state By Michelle Snow Wednesday, March 2, the Union Cougars basketball team traveled to Ogden to play in the state tournament, but returned home alter one days play. The Cougars played the first game of the tournament against the Delta Rabbits, but lost by 14 points. Final score was 63 to 71. Since the first round was a singleelimination round, the Cougars came home that night, having ended their season with 11 wins and 9 losses. This was the first time in five years that the Cougars have made to state competition. Forward Kris Riser felt that the team didn't play good team ball, and "the officiating hurt when they blew it open in the third quarter. Forward Pat Rawlings said, It was our goal at the beginning of the year to go to state, and we accomplished it I wish we could have performed better the last game against Delta, however. Captain for the Cougars, Center Gary Wabel, said, A lot of the games we played this season we didnt want to win bad enough. Riser played a good game, sewing 17 points, with Rawlings scoring 10. Wabel and Allan Tucker each added six points to the game for the Cougars. Top rebounder for the game was Rawlings with 10, while Wabel pulled down 8. In the Delta game the Cougars had four of the five starters foul out, afirst this season. Coach KevenPrusak was asked how he felt about the season. His Tm pleased with the reply progress the team has made as individuals, and I am proud that theyve played well as a team. Pnisak went on to say, We showed that we can be competitive, and with some of the talent we have coming up, hopefully we can continue. Seven of this years players will be graduating, insuring that next yew's team will be young and fresh. The team and coaching staff felt that they would like to thank the w, fans and parents for coming to the games, putting up posters, making cakes, and all the other things that are required to make this season a winning one. ?: Six urn-- .
