Show .Page 12. October 1. 1986 I Soorts Uintah (Basin Standard Union wins in real heartstopper, Homecoming games are suppose to be exciting games, but the Union Cougars almost had a heart-stoppwhen they let Wasatch get, within one point of them last Friday. The Cats won the game 22 to 21 against the Wasps, but only due to a safety. "I was glad to see we came out and started hard, Coach Paul Maggio stated. The opening play of the game was a 17 yard run fin: er the Cats. But by the end of the first quarter the effort was evident to the tune of a 6 to 7 score with- - Wasatch one point ahead. At the half both had scored touchdowns and the score was 13 to 14, still Wasatch. one point ahead. The next quarter had Wasps hitting pay dirt with 7:06 of the third and the Cougars getting a double safety with 11:14 of the fourth. It wasn't actually a double safety, the first safety was called back and then the blocked punt from the Wasp endzone was the one that actually put the two points on the board. The final score, in the game came with 6:11 left on a 30 yard TD pass to Trent Larsen. That tied the seme and the successful PAT (point after touchdown) gave the Cats the lead and the win. ( The Cats had 83 yards in the Eddie Samuels making with air, five of 13 attempts with only three interceptions. They also rolled for 116 yards on the ground. Wasatch on the other hand would have had only 27 yards for their total without the three big days for TDs. They broke a 90 run, a 45 yard pass and a 48 yard run fix scores. The Wasps had only one sustained drive all night, of only seven plays. So if it wasnt fix the defensive mistakes, Coach Maggio said, the Cats' should have had a 21 or 22 to 0 game. Part of the problem, Maggio said, was he had people out of position. The moves were made to help Ray Farnsworth with an injury. Farnsworth injured his leg in practice on Wednesday and Coach Maggio held him out the first half. Still, only playing one Farnsworth made five half, tackles. Defensively the team was lead by Phil Bertosh, with nine tackles, Samuels had five, Steve Adamson and Martin Locke each had three. Maggio said the offensive line is still a bit sluggish fix him and they must leam to open holes fix the runners better. They are okay on pass Mocking . but the openings are hard to learn, which i Before a large 'and shivering crowd, Duchesne soundly thumped Altamont in .the Longhorn's homecoming game, Friday night. But at first, it looked like it might be an upset In the opening minutes of play, Arby Brinkerhoff scored a surprise touchdown fix the first and only score qf the first quarter, as the Longhorns held the Eagles scoreless. Maggio said the Cats mistakes made the Cowboys look better than they really wen but the Cats cant affort to look past the Braves after what they did to the Cowboys. One other thing the North Summit team has going fix them is a luge line. They reputedly have lineman in the 235 and 210 category, so it is going to be a tough day in the trenches fix the .Ifel X.W linemen. The game will be in Roosevelt All the public is invited to come out and support the v team. The Gats had the Wasps in their grasp most of the evening as this picture shows. Steve Adamson, Martin Locke and an unidentified Cougar all got into this tackle before it ended. The game ended with Union winning 22 to 21 . Longhorn coach David Peck said, We made a lot of mental mistakes that cost us the game. He said the Longhorns really let down after the first quarter. They had some problems with their punting, and their usually strong defense just couldnt seem to hold Duchesne back. They especially had trouble with the Eagles passes. s. . Carbon's running attack they can have a chance at beating them. The Eagles are getting set fix a game against Dugway. Coach Young said Dugway . has traditionally been a good team. But he said though they have a good defense, they struggle on offense. He said they ate a lot like Monti--, cello. That game will be at Dugway Friday.
