Livestock Livestock tc Ip The Constitutional Bicentennial Series Editors Note As the bicentennial anniversary of the Constitution approaches, acutally coming up next year, at various times in the coming year there will be articles on different aspects of the Constitution. As is pointed out in this selection, from the sixth grade class of Scott Riser at East Elementary School, the Constitution should be a subject of interest for aD Americans. We should all know what the Constitution provides and what it gives to individuals, local governments, state governments and the federal government But how many of us really know? Towards this end this and future articles are directed. We are students from Mr. Kisers Sixth Grade class and we have listed some things about the Constitution. The Constitution is something that has rights for people so that they can be free and live in peace. We think that more people in the United States should be more involved in the Constitution, because it is their rights to get involved with. The reason we celebrate the Constitution is to have freedom and to make sure slavery never will happen again. We think slavery never should have happened in the first place. If we hadnt thought of the Constitution then there probably would still be slavery. We study the Constitution in Bchool because we want to learn about the freedoms we have here1 Last week Thursday, February 27: Lane Brian Halverson waived his right to preliminary hearing. The first thing the did was to elect delegates Washington as the presiding officer of the convention. they choee William Jackson, a former army officer, for secretary and decided on the rules to be followed. It waa agreed that voting would be by states. It was also agreed that a majority (mare than half) of the. states present could decide any question, and that each state, whether big or small, should have only (me vote. All the small states were happy with this rule, especially Delaware. Then the bigger states started to get angry, so they started a debate. The delegates debated bitterly. The New Jersey Plan was voted down fry seven states. But they finally agreed cm a plan end started writing the Constitution. Its anything to avoid lung cancer." These statements about cancer have two things in common: first, they reflect an attitude of regarding cancer helplessness prevention, and second, they all are incorrect. Unfortunately, though, this sense of inevitability is common, despite the many advances in the fight against cancer. To dispel this mistaken sense of hopelessness, the American Cancer Society has brought out a new public education program, Taking Control, which offers ten simple steps people can take now to reduce their risk of getting cancer, and possibly prevent the disease. Taking Control is one of our most significant programs to date because it represents the Societys new emphasis on cancer said James L. prevention, Parkin, M.D. the president of the Utah Division of the American Cancer Society. Most scientists now believe that our daily habits --- what we eat and drink, whether we smoke ami how often we expose ourselves to the eun determines to a great extent our risk of getting many cancers, he said. "All of throe factors can be controlled easily. We have the power to lessen our chances of getting this disease." Taking Control is the first ACS program to integrate all aspects of cancer prevention -diet, exercise, and general health habits into a program that can be adapted practically to ones lifestyle. It offers ten steps - five habits to adopt and five to curtail - that have been proven through epidemiological studies and laboratory experiments to play a role in curtailing the development of five The cancers. certain 13 Come fiber. r Add more dietary fiber. diets seem to reduce the risk of developing certain cancers, such as cancer of the breast, High-fibe- prostate and colon. This year twenty-fiv- e percent of our education programs Bhould be conducted in this area of said Mrs. cancer prevention, Swinyer. This is our priority this year, she emphasized. "We've been very successful in increasing the cure rate for patients who already have cancer," Dr. Parkin said. Now we have the knowledge that will enable us to attack cancer before it starts. This is some of the best news about cancer we can offer the public. There's no magic potions to ward off cancer, but we are far from helpless.
