Show The Court The standard racquetball court is 20 feet wide, 20 feet high and 40 feet long, with a back wall at least 12 feet high. It is divided into a "front court" and a "back court" by the SHORT LINE, which is painted exactly halfway between and parallel to the front and back walls. Five feet in front of the SHORT LINE is the SERVICE LINE, and the space between the two is called the SERVICE ZONE. Ttys tone has two SERVICE BOXES at either side. In doubles, the server's partner must stand in a service box while the serve is being made. Five feet back from the SHORT LINE a vertical line is painted on each side wall. This is the RECEIVING LINE, and the receiver or receivers must remain behind this line as the sorve is being 'made. They cannot return the served ball until it passes the SHORT LINE. Once the served ball passes the SHORT LINE in a legal serve then any of the players may position themselves anywhere on the court, careful at all times of course that they do not interfere with or endanger the other playeifs). all Rocoivteg Um General Game Description Front Court Sonrico Lina Racquetball is a relatively new game. In the late 1960a-iorganised fonn-i- t has captured the enthusiasm of physical fitness-minde- d people throughout n America. I remember playing paddleball in the old Weber gym when our Scout Troup would visit for our activity. When paddleball was swapped for a strung racquet or when a tennis player experimented by shortening his racquet or when an avid handball player tried to fit the ball with a racquet instead of his hand. No one really knows, but rat we think that racquetball was bom from a merger of all these games. Racketball was criticised greatly by KnnHholl players who disliked the game because it used the handball courts which were in high demand. Racquetball was huwtuul from many private cfoba, community center and YMCA's, where most of all handball was played. The appeal of Racquetball helped it to endure. By the 1960s the number of Racquetball players and fans forced its foes to accept the game and it became widely popular in a very short time. What is the great appeal of Racquetball? Racquetball makes it possible for a person to obtain an enjoyable physical and mental workout without a peat degree of skill. The game deminatea the tennis net and insists on the me stamina required for handball. The short Racquetball makes it a very fast paced event. Another advantage of racquetball is that both men and women can play, boys and girls, anyone old eiwHgh to walk or young enough to run. Racquetball play needs to come to the Uintah Basin. The UBIC Committees have decided to use as its community project the kick off of the regional courts. Our objective is to use the area directly north of the Roosevelt Swimming Pool Complex for a dressing room and control center for the use of both activities. To receive funds from all facets of Uintah Basin we need to use school districts, county, city, churches and community organizations and to first start with private and business donations. UBIC will have a Racquetball booth during UBIC and several events to spear head this initial start. Please stop in at the Racquetball booths or the supporting activity areas. There will be detailed informations, plans and people to answer any questions that you may have and to and pledges. take your donations Bob West home Val Labrum or work 722-476- or work 722-239- 6 722-455- 9 home 722-249- 3. RACQUETBALL U.B.I.C.. Racquetball is a competitive game in which a racquet is used to serve and return the ball. It may be played by two, three or four players. When played by two, it is called "singles," by three "cutthroat" and when played by four, "doubles." The game is won by the first side scoring 21 points. A match is won by the first side winning two games, The player or side winning the toss of a coin becomes the first to serve and starts the first and third game, if a third game is necessary. The server may serve from any place within the service zone, and must remain .in the zone until the ball passes the back service line (short line). To serve, a player bounces the ball on the floor and strikes it so that it hits the front wall first, and on the rebound hits the floor in back of the short line, either with or without touching a side wall. If the serve hits both side walls or the ceiling after hitting the front wall, it is considered a FAULT. In singles, two FAULTS result in a SIDE OUT, and retires the side. In doubles, retiring the first server is a HAND OUT and retiring the second server is a SIDE OUT and retires the side. The objective is to win each rally by serving or returning the ball in such a manner that your opponent cannot return the ball before it bounces twice an the floor. A point is made when the serving side wins the rally. For the fine points of racquetball rules and regulations, we suggest you flip to the rules section of this booklet. In the meantime, the. brief description furnished above should be enough to get you started. So now, let's hit the court.
