In a ranted move, portions of the Provo River will be whitefish opened to the season. The new regulations take effect January 1, 1983. Yellow perch, once thought of as trash fish by Utah fishermen, have gained popularity in recent years. First cousin to the walleye, these tasty panfish offer fast action winter and summer. Natural bait or artificials will take perch, which are abundant in Deer Creek Reservoir. There is no limit on perch, a fact which has added to their newly found popularity. At Lake Powell, one of the top waters in the producing state, the striped bass limit will raised from two to four fish next year, and the walleye limit from 10 to 20. Striper fishing at Powell has been nothing short of phenomenal this foil, and its still going strong. Recent reports from Hite Marina, at the upper end of the lake, tell of excellent surface action for the big bass. Gulls or ravens circling over the water and diving birds on the surface are telltale signs of feeding stripers, which follow schools of threadfin shad. The birds feed on crippled shad left by the bass. Surface feeding stripers may be lures that caught with imitate wounded shad. Once hooked these fish offer a tough fight, usually making several deep runs before tiring. Though the surface action will soon be over, striped bass may be caught throughout the winter. As the water cools, both shad and stripers seek deeper water where temperatures are more constant. Heavy feathered jigs or spoons jigged vertically in 50 to 80 feet of water are effective at this time of year, and a fish locator is the best way to find the fish. Flaming Gorge Reservoir in northeastern Utah offers excellent fishing for rainbow, brown and mackinaw trout. A world record 33 Vi pound brown trout was caught there of 1977 in Monster Tjrowns and mackinaws go on the prowl during the fall and winter Utahs year-roun- d off-seas- year-roun- d th year-roun- fish-eatin- ON THE MOVE Eagle Brad Caldwell scored two of his ten points last Saturday in Altamont as the Eagles and Cougars met in the Basin Tournament. Obviously, at the Christmas season, the warmer climates hold an enormous advantage, as do all counts near salt water. In 1981, the' count in the Atlantic area of the Paftama Canal Zone scored highest with 303 species; the highest U.S. count in 1981 was Santa Barbara, California with 212. By contrast. Noth Star Island, Alaska, found no birds. No less than 47 of the 1222 counts in the U.S. listed 150 or more species, almost all of them in the balmier climes of California, Texas and Florida. All this information will be gathered, edited, and published in the July 1983 issue of American Birds ($9.50 ppd.) whose editors organize and run the annual extravaganza. Apart from its attraction as a social, sporting, and competitive event, the annual event sheds much light on the early winter distribution of the different species of our native birds: where they are, and what number. All counts are open to competent birders, willing to pay a $2 fee to help defray costs of publication. Since then the annual event has grown from its original 25 to last season's 1418, and the total participants from 27 to an estimated 35,000. This year every Canadian province, every American state, many Central American counties, and numerous West Indies islands will submit their results to the National Audubon Society, which supervises the affair, and publishes all the counts in its journal, American Birds. The count itself is undoubtedly the big birding event of the year, and for some groups it means days and weeks of strategy, planning, and logistics in trying to amass, in a single calendar day, the biggeBt possible list of birds in the designated area. By tradition that count area is a circle (which cannot overlap another count circle) of diameter, or roughly 177 square miles. Within this circle of land and water, count organizers attempt to field as maqy competent birders as they can, who are grouped into parties," each with a section of the circle, or points on the map, which they alone will search. There is no limit to the number of participants: last year Greenwich-StamforConn., fielded 235, and there were 26 counts with 100 or more participants. There seems almost no limit, either to the numbers of birds Christinas Counters can find in their. December NEWS JO MOVIE: bafe Utah ot Portland Henry Fonda: The aCDMyetaryl cost-ot-livin- . Bonneville October and November mark the spawning run of the big macks, and fishermen may take their limit of two fish trolling or casting big spoons from shore. Good areas are near the state park and off the rocky jetties of the marina. Bonneville whitefish, larger and more easily caught than the Rocky Mountain whitefish found in Utah rivers, move onto the spawning beds of Bear Lake early in December. During the spawning run these fish are readily caught from boats or shore using small spoons, spinners or feathered jigs. The technique is to jig or retrieve the lure just off the rocky bottoms in water up to 30 feet deep. The same method works later during the cisco run, when the whitefish feed on the cisco eggs. These scrappy fish average about a pound, but three pounders are not unusual. They put up a good fight, especially on light tackle. Bonneville whitefish are excellent tablefare, somewhat better than the Rocky Mountain whitefish. A liberal limit of 20 fish make the Bonneville whitefish a great bonus for Bear Lake anglers. Other popular winter waters along the Wasatch Front include Willard Bay, for crappie and walleye, Pineview Reservoir for trout, bass, crappie and bluegill, and Utah lake for walleye and white bass.
