Show I 17 HJJintah Sports IBasin Standard UNITY STRESSED Union opens season with Alia mo ni squad Predicting the future of a high school basketball team is not an easy task, and Unions coach Kim Peterson is as cautious as most when it comes to statements about their upcoming season. However, Peterson is sure pf one thing; his Union team is very much united this year and possesses a positive attitude. Peterson came to Union this year after several successful seasons in Altamont. He said one of the most nt surprises this season has how quickly his team has adapted to the new offense. They have pickki it up faster than I had expected. said Peterson. Last Saturday evening provided Peterson with his first good look at his Cougars. The team held their d scrimmage. Kim said he was pleased with many things he saw, but recognized several areas where work is needed. The first of these is that of the fast worked on it break. He said once in practice, and said it didn't look too good in the scrimmage. Kim inter-squa- . they-onl- added, however, that this doesnt pose too much of a concern because his players have picked up quickly on the other aspects of the game. Peterson said there are also several aspects of the game which he feels very good about The first of these is their foul shooting. Another area is that of rebounding. He said His players are very aggressive and have the ability to iump- However, he said they need to become more'adept at boxing out - Our defense will be good, said Peterson, "or at least it better be. He said his team possesses the quickness necessary and also the desire. He said his team will also possess the ability to have each of the starters score in double figures, something they will need. We dont like to rely on any one person," said Kim. He said because of their offense a number of players are going to get the ball, and this should provide for more even scoring. The Cougars will open their season by hosting the Altamont Longhorns - Friday, November 19. Peterson said he is expecting the Longhorns to fast break quite a bit, but he isnt sure as to which defense they will use. We should' match up fairly weU with Altamont, Kim said. Kim said the early season is very important for his team, and for that reason he isnt throwing a number of tricky things into play. He said they will be using a number of presses and traps later this year, but said for right now they will remain with the basics. He said they will be making a great many turnovers, he is expecting in the 20's for a while, but with a fast breaking team that is to be expected. Peterson said he feels very good about this years team. He said his boys will be tough because they are playing as a team and have a great deal of unity. I 1 Russ Nielson hooked his way past Ryan Adams last Saturday in the Cougar scrimmage. Union coach Kim Peterson said he is excited about this season. He admits there are several areas needing improvement, but said his team has shown a great desire to improve.
