Show i Employers pay underpayments Employers to agreed restore $674,963 in wage underpaymenta to 2,428 Utah workers for violations of ' minimum wage, overtime, equal pay or age discrimination provisions of federal labor standards laws in fiscal 1980. Doyle Loveridge, Regional Administrator for the U.S. Labor Department's Employment Standards Administration (ESA), Denver, announced enforcement results this week. These substantial findings result from the department's continuing . commitment to workers and protection of their rights," Loveridge said. "The minimum wage law has continued to protect workers at the low end of the wage scale by providing a minimum standard of living and also by preventing these workers from shouldering an unfair burden in the fight against inflation." In the Rocky Mountain Region a total of $2,386,540 was restored to 14,311 workers Loveridge said. The regional amounts are: $972,620 in Colorado; in Utah; $674,963 $293,863 in North Dakota; $184,244 in South Dakota; $133,588 in Wyoming; and $127,262 in Montana. On Jan. 1, 1981, the minimum wage increased from $3.10 to $3.35 per hour affecting approximately 160,000 worke ers in the region. Loren Gilbert, Assistant Regional Administrator for ESAs Wage-Hou- r Division, said the past fiscal years enforcement efforts in the region disclosed a total of $4,474,784 in wage underpaymenta due to 21,727 workers. six-sta- te six-stat- (EUW), the Wage and Hour Division FLSA and other labor standards investigations at industries and localities where undocumented workers have traditionally been employed. Violations of the minimum wage and overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) accounted for the bulk of underpayments disclosed -$1,215,626 due 10,224 workers in minimum wage underpayments and $2,948,156 due 12,625 workers in overtime underpayments. The overall number of workers and the workers due back wages under separate provisions or acts may not agree because some employees were owed back wages under more than one provision or act. Over $307,700 of the total back wages was found due workers under the Davis-Bacoand related acts, the Service Contract Act, the Contract Work Hours and Safety Standards Public Act, and the Walsh-Heale- y Contracts Act - all laws which set wage and hour standards that must be met for workers employed by government contractors. Equal Pay Act and Age Discrimination in Employment Act violations accounted for another $3,300 of the total wage underpayments or damages found owed to workers. Administration and enforcement of these two laws was transferred July 1, 1979 to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, whose enforcement results are not included in ESA's data. Question: Obviously you are safer at 55 mph than at 65 or 70, but I can't believe it makes that much difference at such speeds. Are thre any statist irs on speed limit safety? My husband and I don't think 55 is worth the trouble. M.B. Answer: Think again! The lower speed makes an enormous difference in your reaction time for slopping, dodging, and generally avoiding collisions. American traffic deaths dropped by 9,000 a year after 55 mph became the speed limit. The experts say your rhances of surviving a wreck at 70 mph are only 50 50. But at 55 mph, the ods of survival are 31 to 1 in your favor. We'll lake those odds any day. n Utahs cattlemen must comply with mandatory livestock vaccination Several of the states surrounding Utah now require calfhood vaccino-tio- n of female cattle being sold for breeding purposes. These states in- clude California, Oregon, and Idaho. Washington, This regulation will increase the importance of vaccination to many of Utah's cattlemen and dairymen since female cattle from Utah will be prohibited from sale into those states except for slaughter. Enforcement of this regulation by other states will also underscore the importance of proper identification at the time of vaccination. If the vaccination tattoo can't be read at a later date, that animal will be considered a non- -' vaccinate. The original tattoo must last the entire lifetime of the animal, since it is illegal to a tattoo that has faded. r Fitness jTips . . . Fresh fruits and vegetables, along with whole grains, should form the bulk of our nutritional lifestyles. We continue to find supportive data for this position even though it is well established at the present time. Heres the latest: The many raw carrots I eat taste even better now that the September October issue of the Journal of Food Science reported that carrots recently have been found to contain a substance that inhibits the production of afla toxin, a natural food contaminant that can be a potent cancer-causin humans. That's not to mention the fact that they are high in fiber, low in calories, a super source of Vitamin A, and they sound terrific when you eat them raw. Cholesterol Levels Are Changed If you are worried about the amount of LDL cholesterol (bad kind) in your blood, here are some health ly substitutions you can make. The October issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that researchers at the University of Minnesota recently substituted 500 calories worth of vegetables for 500 calories worth of sugar in the diets of healthy adults and found that their cholesterol levels dropped by 22 millograms per deciliter of blood. Since this proved interesting, they pursued it further with leafy vegetables, root vegetables and whole grains separately to give credit where credit was due. The experiment ran for 12 weeks. Two hundred calories worth of leafy vegetables (Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, onions and spinach) in place of 200 calories worth of sugar lowered total serum cholesterol levels by an average of 10 to 11 milligrams. Four hundred calories worth of whole grains (corn, oats and wheat) substituted for 400 calories worth of sugar also lowered cholesterol levels by 10 to 11 milligrams. Three hundred calories worth of Proper identification by your veterinarian at vaccination should follow these guidelines: 1 ) Tattoo in the right ear. (Producers should leave this ear free of tattoos and tags when possible in heifer calves. 2) Use cotton to clean wax from the ear surface. A cotton gove works well. Cotton soaked in alcohol will do even better. 3) Apply tattoo instrument. 4) Work ink in with a toothbrush. Thick pastes are much better than the If a roll-othin is used it should be brushed in well. Green ink is more visible if usedjn black roll-on- s. Off course! n pigmented ears. 5) The calf must also be tagged. The official orange bangs vaccination tag is preferred but an official DHI tog is acceptable if properly recorded. root vegetables (beets, parsnips, ruteb egers, sweet potatoes, turnips), even though less effective, caused cholesterol levels to drop an average of 5 milligrams Dec deciliter. As the little girl on TV says, "Now thats a good deal. Fats and Blood Pressure Another interesting nutrition report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) may be helpful to those with high blood pressure. In three separate studies scientists checked the effect of eating equal amounts of saturated and polyunsaturated fats on lowering blood pressure in 70 men and women between 40 and 60 years of age. All were healthy except for moderate hypertension. The subjects did not gain or lose weight and their salt intake was the average Americans 8 to 10 grams per day. They found that the elevated blood pressure went down into the normal range when the fat intake was neatly balanced. Since the average American eats twice as must saturated as polyunsaturated fat, mostly from meat and animal products, it is easy to see how more fruits and vegetables (higher in the polyunsaturated) and much less meat can get you nearer the balance. You may not run like a rabbit, but you should eat like one. er Walker Bank offers the new checking account which pays 5 A interest . account We also realize that no one checking or checking-saving- s is right for everybody.
