Show 1 Thursday, November 27, 1980 Uintah Basin Standard UHS National Honor Society New help for headaches The Union National Honor Society Chapter is reaching its goal of becoming a leader of its school with involvement and support from its members and soon-to-b-e members. Membership in the NHS nationally has grown at a remarkable pace. The Society charters 860 to 400 new chapters every year. It has now more than 20,000 chapters nationwide. Becoming a member plays a very meaningful role in the student's life. Membership is a strong reference to a student's character ' and academic achievement, besides his service to the community and schooL Being a member is a good indication of probably success in a higher education. NHS members are eligible to try for scholarship awards which are given each year by the National Association. They are also able to take a day off of school for an educational field trip. Members of the local NHS are elected by a faculty council. Prospective members must be on .the honor roll, which requires maintaining an A minus average. They are then evaluated in areas of character, service and leadership. Advisor for the Union high school Honor Society is George Miller, who is also a science and computer instructor and Mrs. Kathryn Taylor, counselor at Union high school. Biofeedback, though hardly a household word, has become a common term in medical and scientific circles and an increasingly important concept to the hosts of people who suffer from tension and migraine headaches and other stress-relate- d ailments. At Utah Valley hospital, biofeedback instruments are used routinely to measure stress and to train people to recognise and control harmful levels of stress. To the patient, success means that he can control his pain without medication. Since many medications prescribed to control serious headache pain are addictive, this is an attractive . a' '4 4':, K A Debra Hoopes has been called to serve a mission for the LDS Church. Biofeedback training is accompanied by psychotherapy sessions, wherein the patient or client is coached and instructed by a trained therapist. The doctor or therapist offers helpful visualization cues and imagery ideas to help the handwarming process. If he succeeds, the headache is averted or lessened in severity. The principles of biofeedback training are also being applied to help people who work in occupations where constant stress causes depression, high employee turnover and other undesirable effects for both employer and employee. Stress management seminars, tor instance, are becoming a ..regular part of the inservice curriculum at Utah Valley hospital and the hospital has produced a cassette tape and Muscle Relaxation entitled Autogenic Training for both clinical and popular use. But if we had just enough for that meal and no more, would Cve be just as grateful or would we be bitter and envious of those that have so much more? We are extremely fortunate to hove so much wealth. Be grateful for more than the feasts you enjoy. Be grateful for the freedom we have to enjoy our feast.
