They will serve through 1981. Members will not be paid, but rather will contribute their time as a public service. Councils will meet at the request of the district managers - normally four times a year. The new district advisory councils are the successors to the district multiple-us- e advisory boards, which were long employed by the Bureau. The boards ceased to exist with enactment of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976, which contained new directives for BLM and a mandate for broader opportunities for involvement of citizens in decisionmaking. The recently appointed councils thus represent a "new generation of citizen advisory bodies whose members are being selected not only tar their general knowledge but for their ability to take a broad public overview of public land management and planning. |
