Show Sun Advocate Price, Utah Thursday, March 7, 2002 Basketball Special page 6 Rabbits 6 in the first quarter. The second quarter was a little better for the Rabbits, as Delta allowed Carbon to score only 14 points, while coming up with eight of their own. But to catch up to the Dinos, they would have had to score quite a bit more, and they realized that going into the locker room at the half with a score of After the half, Delta came back to play better defense and offense, this time out scoring the Lady Dinos But even with a 16 point lead going into the fourth quarter, the starting five returned to the floor for Carbon to secure their lead. Soon the JV squad took over, and once again, put in more points than Delta, 21-- 35-1- 4. 14-- 9. 16-1- 3. Cota 17 Enery 40 , Feb. 5, 2002 Dinogym, Price Once again, the Warburton sisters were on fire. The sisters managed to boost Carbort's spirits and helped to lead the team down the road to victory. Chclscy Warburton lead the team in scoring with 21 points, while sister Classic lead the team in rebounds with 12, while scoring nine points. Not to be outdone, Morgan also finished with seven points against the Spartans. . Although the Warhurtons tend to run the floor for Carbon, teammates Stephanie Cox, Lauren Reaveley, and Brittany. Pollastro also contribute quite nicely and frequently to the winning Dino team. In this show down, Cox scored seven points, Pollastro 1, and Reaveley finished with four points. The game was intense, however the Spartans struggled to gain control of the game against the powerful Dino team. Although many Emery fans were in attendance supporting their favorite team, the Spartans just could not put the Dinos down. This year, they didnt have to flip a coin or share it. . In the first quarter, it seemed as though North Sanpete wasn't going to score, as their offense failed time after time, while Carbons obviously didn't, as they put up 20 points, compared to North Sanpete's seven. As with previous games, and as would be expected, the Lady I lawk's coach changed up their plays a bit, allowing them to score 7, but still wasn't enough to catch up, as they went into the locker nxm down 20 points, 44-2North Sanpete had higher hopes for the third quarter, hoping to turn the game around, but that thought soon left their minds as the Ijidy Dinos continued laying on the heat, doubling North Sanpetes out put for that quarter, 16--8 doing into the final quarter, Carbon, ahead by 28, had several players in foul trouble, and had to end the game without Brittany Pollastro or Morgan Warburton. - Lauren Reaveley, Senior guard Cassie Warburton, Senior forward 1 4. feta 71 p, L ' " f; v ' . ... It wasnt the big victory they had just achieved. It wasnt the score that amazed people. It wasnt even the Region 8 trophy that was presented to the team at the end of the game by principal and Utah I ligh School' Activities official Robert Cox. It was to savor the moment; an undefeated regular season. From start to finish they dominated the game against the Region 8 second place team. Lehi never scored more than 10 in a quarter during the whole contest. It was 12-- 0 before Lehi could score anything at all and the points just kept piling up on the kids from Utah County until the final buzzer rang. By the end of the first quarter the score was 19-In the second period Lehi did manage to slow down Carbon just a bit, holding them to 16, but their offense was still befuddled by Carbon's pressure and they had another 9 point quarter, leaving the halftime score 35-1The third period was Lehis best period offensively and defensively as they were only out scored It was then the Lady Pioneers should have circled their wagons however, because the wild Lady Dinos were about to ride down on their encampment and take away any chance of victory from them. Time after time someone knocked a ball loose or outright took it away from a Lady Pioneer and ran down the floor to score a basket In the end the steals and defense made it so Lehi could only muster six points in the quarter. - ; - The Carbon High cheerleaders with the schools mascot, Dino at Bums Arena on the Dixie Stats College campus in St George during the 3A state tournament 9. 8. 15-1- 0. . At the end of the quarter the Dino gym was rockin and fans were waiting for the 19-- 8 score to turn into 80 to 40 by the end of the contest However, that is when Canyon View changed their game, and 'Carbons in the process. They must have talked to Snow Canyon about the victory they achieved against the Lady Dinos earlier this year because they started to play in much the same way, deliberate and to a large extent slow. The second quarter looked like the Battle of the Marne in World War 1; trench warfare with both teams attacking but neither gaining much ground. In the end Canyon View had actually held Carbon to 7 points, less than Chclscy Whrburton usually gets in a quarter by herself. Meanwhile the the Lady Falcons had non-regi- on - . - . slowly as both teams struggled scored 10. In the third quarter the Lady Rdcons winged their way in the same direction. They did not out score the Lady Dinos in the third quarter, but they did not let the kids from Carbon score much on them either. The second quarter had been anemic for Carbon and the third period wasnt much better as they posted only 1 1 points, three better than the kids from Iron County. The fourth period was even worse for the Carbon girls. Canyon View started out the quarterveiy strong and got the score within two points of the Lady Dinos lead, a small deficit which they held onto for what seemed an eternity. But a hero for Carbon finally did emerge in the last four minutes, to help put the game away for goiod. That was freshman Morgan Warburton. Her older sisters had had a tough tune of it that evening. Chelseys scoring was well below normal and sister Cassie, whose hard nose play usually gets her a bushel of points, had not had a normal game. Canyon View had taken the two older Wfaiburtons seriously and had done much to foul up their trips down court. But Morgan was a new entity which 'they seemed to know little about The Falcons iaid a big egg on that one. Morgan not only popped in a three poihter toward the end of the game, but she muscled in a two pointer from the right side after a Brittany Pollastro, Junior post Chelsey Warburton, Junior guard i - only managed nine points in the final quarter. 1 |
