Everyone knew the Carbon High Lady Dino team would be good this year. Many thought that this team would roll through the preseason without a loss. Some even pondered the possibility the team could go totally undefeated. Both those possibilities went out the door on a add and snowy Saturday afternoon in Castle Dale when Snow Canyon ended those thoughts in an overtime game that had thrills and spills, but no victory for the kids from Carbon County. Neither team probably played as well as they could and certainly the Dinos over a three or five gone series would win it with the Lady Warriors, but somehow the kids from Santa Clara ecked out a one point victory That capped an otherwise successful week with a sour note. On the previous Thursday night the girls from Carbon took on the Dixie Hie next High Lady Flyers in the Dino gym and crushed them down a Dale the Castle to start took bus Castle to evening they trip Vblley Tournament and took on Roosevelts Union Cougarettes defeating them In the game against Dixie, Carbon started slowly. With that said, however, they still dominated Dixie and had already taken a 12-- 5 lead by die end of the first period. While the teams game in that period seemed somewhat lackluster, one play toward the end of the quarter was a vision of things to come. Ninth grader Morgan Wbiburton brought the ball down the court andmadeapassundaneaththreeDixiedefendeistoateammatefbr an easy score. It was an almost unbelievable pass, The second period was worse for the Lady Flyers. The Carbon County team really piled on the points out scoring the opposition 22-- 8 in the period and went into the locker room at the half with a ' commanding 4 lead. After the half things still remained in Carbons favor, but the girls from St George seemed to pick up the pace quite abit and were only out done 6 in the third period. The fourth quarter was a chance for Coach Bruce Bean to play court time. The Lacty Flypeople who dont often get much but the victory was ers actually out scored the Lady Dinos 20-1secure right from the first moment of the fourth quarter. Friday night brought another commanding victory to the Lady Dinos. The Lady Dinos jumped out to a big lead right offthe bat and led by 10, 17-- 7 by the end of the first In the second period die beating continued as the Lady Dinos doubled the points scored by the opposition 14-- By halftime it was all over and everyone but the kids from Roosevelt knew it 'The second half again allowed Bean to give his subs time to play against someone other than their teammates. In the end it was still a rout, just not quite as large of one as it could have been. That victory led to Sahnday afternoon and the championship game. It was also the first real teg against a ranked opponent for Carbon in the season. .The game started out as it should have from Carbons point of view. However the Lady Dinos still out scored Park City iM in the period. Chelsey Warburton, already at midseason shape and showing why she was the only sophomore selected to the 3A all state first team last year poured in 28 points to pace Carbon. Big sister Cassie also went to town on the Lady Miners scoring 16 20-1- 5. as p . In this game, the kids from Carbon High jumped out to a huge lead right from the beginning and just kept adding to it. The second period brought a change. The Lady hrriors started out using a three quarter court defense that realty bothered die kids from Carbon. That strategy didnt directly lead to many scores for Charlies Pawn Shop Loans Sell Buy Snow Canyon, but it did cut down on the scoring opportunities for the Lady Dinos and put a veiy cold wind into the sails of their vesseL At the hal Snow Canyon had come back and made the game much more respectable. However, based on the past it appeared Carbon still had command with a 21-1- 5 lead and plenty of breathing room. The third quarter was a disastrous one concerning scoring for both teams. Snow Canyon only scored eight points; worse however was Carbons out put which was only six. Still the Lady Dinos had a four point lead going into the fourth. Snow Canyon then poured on the tough play in the final regulation period. Iheywacked and they hacked themselves toalead which they barely dung onto with only seven seconds left in regulation time. After two free throws, Snow Canyon was ahead by three, 35-3- 1 It was obvious what had to be done, but the question was which of the Itaiburton sisters would get the call to attempt to knot the game at 35 alL Carbon inbounded the ball, Chelsey Warburton brought it down court and passed to sister Cassie who had not hit a three pointer all night But it went through the hoop hardly disturbing the net and with literally no time left on the dock. The celebration was tremendous; and after that it seemed Carbon had the momentum to take the overtime. And in fact the first basket scored in the OT was Carbons. It was also the only one. Snow Canyon was able to hold Carbon to no more points in the extra period, while scoring all three of its points from the charity stripe. bb v-- Mr ' 24 Hour Emergency Service (435) 637-729- 1 www.tramelectric.com P.0. Highway 10, Price E3 Uutak 23 1 1 a r'- - f ' I i.i Dec. 4, 2001 Dinogym, Price W L It would be hard to imagine a game where every other trip down the court with a ball would result in a steal by the opposing team; it would be harder to imagine that one player could steal the ball four times in a row during that same game. But that is what was done. By the end of a game, where she didnt play near the number of minutes that she usually does, junior guard Chelsey Warburton had amassed not only 27 points, but had taken the ball away from the opposition a total of 16 times, possibly a school record. However, that doesnt mean the rest of the Lady Dinos didnt perform their felonious duties as well. Chelseys sister Cassie harassed the Uintah girls enough by herself to get the defensive crown in any game; Brittany Pollastro and Stephanie Cox went after rebounds with a vicious demeanor that John Dillinger would have - loved. It was just the opposite of Saturdays game against Snow Canyon. That day the team looked tired and sluggish; whojcould expect anything else. They had had a grueling weekwith a number of games and literally no rest. The game against Uintah began as a blowout and that didnt change as the game progressed. Uintah made the first basket and led 3--2. That was the last time the kids from Vernal saw the light of day. It became the St Valentines Day massacre after that Chelsey Wuburton picked their pockets when she could, which was often and then just took the ball out of the Uintah guards hands if she couldnt get the ball with finer techniques. Her trips down the court with the fast break became as common as the donuts popping out of the frying machine at Krispy Creme. At the end of the first period Carbon led 21-- 5, and it didnt get aity better for the kids from Uintah County.
