For information, call Pastor Andrew Lasslo at 472-591- Human development Sf financial, emotional stress associated By GLEN JENSON USU Extension Periods of unemployment are rapidly becoming a norm at locations across Utah. Unemployment can come about with little notice. The resulting income loss as well as associated mental and emotional factors can cause huge amounts of stress and major life changes for Carbon County residents. There are a host of things that can bring about unemployment. , The terrorism of Sept. 1 1 has changed how secure many of Americans feel about employment situations. Institutions once viewed as stable have been forced to decrease the number of people they employ due to economic downturn. Physical or mental health problems along with divorce can also contribute to loss of household income or unanticipated unemployment. Appropriate actions and behavioral attitudes can be important factors in overcoming problems associated with unemployment. Though job loss can cause difficulties and disorganization, the good news is that many families become creative and the members join forces to make the best of the situation. The following are suggestions for Carbon County residents to consider when faced with unemployment. Involve the entire family. It is usually best that all members in the family know what is happening so they can fully participate in the solutions. Parents and children can often find ways to realign their work efforts to assist the family as a whole. Spouses and children may be able to participate more fully in producing needed family income. Adults and youth should let others know they are out of work. Friends and family may see or hear of employment op. ideas and places to contact. The support groups may suggest ways to cope mentally and emotionally as well, Displaced workers should contact public and private employment agencies. The agencies deal with joh loss on a daily basis and can offer many resources and ideas, including how to use the Internet to search for employment opportunities. Displaced workers should refrain from former employers. Criticizing the companies will not help the displaced workers or the employers. People who are looking for jobs will most likely need a reference from former employers in order to secure positions in the work place. And a positive reference will be important in obtaining a new bad-mouthi- job. Job seekers should find out what resources are available from former employers. Many companies have resources for helping former employees find new labor market positions. Religious leaders can be a good source of emotional support for unemployed individu- - ips on handling als. The religious leaders may also know of resources to contact or places in the community ' hiring people with the job seekers, qualifications. While looking for jobs, people should never ignore the positive things that are happening around them. Noticing the nice things people do for others tends to improve everyone's outlook, even in times of economic stress. People should also recognize the beauties of nature and comment to others about things they enjoy and appreciate. Job seekers should consider volunteering within the community. Doing something for others can do wonders to boost feelings of Job seekers should prepare themselves to be willing to accept employment outside their specific areas of training or previous experience. A new challenge can lead to new opportunities and growth. In addition, unemployed residents should consult professional financial counselors who can help manage limited resources. .
