GhUitmal ity of monticello 20 years ago Friends and guests met at the home of Monaco Lopez, Jr. in Monticello to pay homage to the patron of Mexico, our Lady of Guadeloupe. The Lopez family began celebrating the saint in home rites after the father of Monaco was granted a special favor by the Lady of Guadeloupe. This rite is handed from father to son. The Lopez brothers danced before an altar to the violin music of their father and rhythm provided by the drumming of the sister, Pauline. Food was on hand for the long ceremony. The rosary was said at 1 a.m. The Lady of Guadeloupe is revered in similar public ceremonies throughout Mexico, from where the Lopez family, children of American parents born in Mexico, recently immigrated. Major dancers at the festival were Monaco Jr.; Anastacio, Manuel, Fidel, Ludo, Israel and Sabino Lopez. A masked figure, called the why, joined the dance to admonish dancers who failed to follow directions. 24-ho- ur PHONE & FAX 435-587-22- 77 sjmews8aol.com WEB PAGE www.utahpress.com sanjuan record To have a sample copy sent to a friend, aend ue nis or her address.
