Nine grandparents of all ages come to school every to week for at least an hour or more and listen stuchildren read. By the middle of the school year, every dent had raised their reading level by one grade level and some by two or three grade levels. In addition to these people, six mothers come in each week to help with reading and writing. School officials say that emerging readers and writers must have help to make good progress. Kudos to all of these volunteers and others, who are making a difference in the lives of Monticello Elementary students. I mean, really, beyond a certain point. Well never be able to pay teachers what theyre actually worth, so they may as well be nestled in amongst the oher San Juaners who struggle to make a living. Lyman, seriously wrote that anyone who came to San Juan in pursuit of worldly wealth would be disappointed. Considering these two viewpoints, teachers seem to fit in w'ell, dont they? More important than having money to spend is being able to spend time profitably. And no one does that better than teachers. Next time you see one, tell them thanks. The uplift you give them may be the best raise they get all year. receiver, Betsy McPherson, art teacher at the Albert R. Lyman Middle School, recently received statewide recognition for her work with the students of Blanding. The Utah Art Education Association presented to her the Outstanding Art Educator Award for the year 2000. Among the reasons cited for her receiving this honor are her community art programs, her work in the schools, and her personal sacrifice and efforts in obtaining funds for a quality program that met state core requirements.
